addicted4444 Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 (edited) It’s ridiculous that after years of whining about DRS the commentators don’t even understand the basics of DRS. The reason dismissals through DRS require more than “50% of the ball” to hit has nothing to do with some idea that you need more than half the ball to hit the stumps for the bails to fall. It has to do with the fact that DRS isn’t perfect, and the ball tracking trajectory it suggests is only the most likely trajectory. There is an equally good chance that the ball is lower than the displayed trajectory as there is that the ball is higher than the displayed trajectory. That’s why you need more than 50> of the ball to hit the stumps. Because what that says is that there is more than a 50% chance the ball will hi the stumps. The numbers are just illustration, but the concept is important. The umpires call exists to account for the fact that the displayed trajectory is almost certainly wrong. In reality, I suspect the way DRS is deployed is that if there is a 100% chance that the ball will hit the stumps, then the graphics show more than 50% of the ball hitting the stump and so that’s always out. If there is a chance that the ball will miss the stump, then the graphics shows less than 50% of the ball hitting the stumps, and if the chances are Less than 10% of it hitting the stumps, it probably shows it missing. So that’s what the 3 possibilities cover. The first is out, the second is umpires call, and the 3rd is not out. The ball trajectory is a convenient, but ultimately fake, graphic that tries to represent the desired result based on the numerical odds in a graphical manner. AuxiliA Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 This might be a good period to bat. The English bowlers must be tired bowling all day. It's hot out there.
shami_123 Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 Thinking back to Rohit's dismissal... It was surprising how he managed to play that entire over blindfolded with both his eyes locked onto personal milestone. In normal circumstances he could be standing at non-striker's end by 4th ball...

You are spot on but the problem with DRS is you are having have two outcomes for the same projected trajectory. Edited March 5, 2021 by putrevus
raki05 Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 Hope Second inning kohli dont waste ball opening with Ishu. Better bowl with spinner.

I think Rohitnis going through whatever Sachin went through in that period where he got out in the 90s like 5 times in a few months or something. Hes been experiencing a lot of milestone pressure it seems.

Even Mayank for Gill would have been better. Of course they wont drop them and thats the problem, its the wrong team. Rahane and Puj struggle against spin on turning tracks. Kohli should be dropped but obviously cant.

It speaks volumes when Root has made a bigger contribution with the ball than Kohli has with the bat. That really says everything about this series. shami_123 1

Yes, that is the fundamental issue. The ICC has tried to thread the needle by introducing Umpires call for those situations. Personally, I think this is a great solution. But it seems to cause cricket watchers a lot of distress. Frankly, I wonder if we wouldn’t be better served by simply changing the graphics so it doesn’t show a trajectory, but instead shows a probability cloud. Basically, just a large shaded patch of red color, with the darkness of the pixel representing the probability that the ball will end up at that location. Seeing all the pink in areas where the ball completely misses the stumps may help naive observers understand why it’s umpire’s call in that situation.

One also has to make the point that the DRS accuracy has improved over the years and will improve a lot more 10 years from now.

As I said Im always happy to help you understand the game better. You pick the best combination to win a game of cricket. Otherwise with your logic, Tendulkar would still be named in the team. Always ask questions, this way you will learn and understand better.
