Apart from Thomson, speeds were pretty low for all others, considering that all they were trying was bowl fast.

I recall roberts clocked 156 on some dodgy speed guns.

Imagine a measuring box at bowlers hand. It’s out of the hand at release alright and ofcourse the ball has to travel for some distance to measure speed. Due to angle full balls travel the distance straight and bounce balls travel at an angle towards the pitch, this is why you often see bounce balls show slightly slower release speeds than the same bowlers full balls. Heavy ball is when the speed at batsman’s end is still high and it thuds into the bat or gloves.

Possible Fidel edwards, jermaine Lawson, tino best all had been there or there abts 152 to 157.

It is out of the hand and these are release speeds.  They have shown this fact many many times on TV. They have shown speeds at the barsman's end too, which is usually 25 k to 35 k less based on a multitude of factors.

 

Short balls register slightly lower speeds because they are directed more towards the ground than towards the batsman. Speed guns, using Doppler effect, cannot weed this out as a result.

 

Short balls, measured using high precision high speed cameras, which track the speed along thd trajectory of the ball, do not necessarily show lower speeds for short balls. But we don't have access to this data. CricViz does.

Well I’m not an expert or have understood science behind it,
however its pretty evident that speeds recorded in certain grounds vary for the same bowler, if its instant speed then this should not matter much where they are bowling, but from observations it doesn’t seem so..

Speeds vary more based on series ( different equipments uaed and number of equipments used ) and method of calculation rather than geographical location.

Could be true however the commentators and pandits have been heard hearing that speed varies in grounds which are at a different height to sea level..

Got this quote from some article about speed guns, it does mention speed is calculated as the ball travels through the air, if the air is thin / thick should have some impact on the speed, theoretically.

“Radar Gun, which works on a similar principle of SONAR, catches the echo of Radio waves as the ball travels through the air, and uses a principle called "Doppler Shift".”

Thinner air leads to lesser drag force & increase in elevation.  Same rule applies on golf courses at higher altitudes.  Ball literally flies..  A 157kph by Umran in Mumbai could make a easy 4-5 kph difference in Dharamsala. 

Games in SA especially at Cape town & Joburg are very exciting as ball flies around.

That travel through air is for a very short distance as release speeds are calculated.

Don't know about speed guns they use in cricket matches but handheld speed guns like stalker sports and pocket radar track the ball through its trajectory. It measures speeds through out its path and shows the highest reading it measures in that path.

Yes, but question is at what point of the release it measures it. It has to be very close to the hand otherwise it won't measure the fastest Speed of the trajectory. That point is important.
