IPL 2021 teams first impression

All teams have played one game each, so below are my quick first impression (note that it is not how you play at the beginning of the tournament but how you shape up towards the business end that matters more):

Team to beat

  • MI - Has all bases covered. Would depend upon sustainability of the form of its players and how it handles key moments

Key challenger

  • KKR - Has weaknesses but can leverage on its strong lower middle order and some key bowlers. If its Ind players hit form esp. during the later stages, even better for it

Dark horse

  • RR - Tons of potential. If guys like Samson, Buttler, Stokes, Tewatia, Archer (when back), Morris, etc., begin to fire at the same time, it can get too hot to handle and may win its 2nd title. If the key players remain inconsistent, may not make it to the playoffs

Party spoilers

  • CSK - Appears as if it can have a few good games but can be outplayed as well. Plays more games at high scoring venues like Mumbai, which may not suit its bowling attack
  • SRH - The opposite of CSK, in the sense that it has a relatively good bowling attack for certain conditions but its batting would need to click better, showing consistency

Flavor teams

  • DC, PK & RCB - Can play some good cricket and even make it to the playoffs but likely to fail at key moments to not win the title (and history has supported that as these teams are yet to win a title). Would need to get their act together big time to go all the way

Let's see how these teams go esp. at the business end of the tournament!

All teams have played one game each. MI, RCB- both sides looked rusty, sloppy. DC- best fielding so far,  Avesh did a nice job with the ball. Looking ahead, bowling with the South African duo, Avesh and Woakes should be strong. If batting holds up, they can contend. CSK- nice batting effort, but don’t think they are good enough. KKR- Indian supporting cast of Rana, Tripathi came to the party. Look like they can contend. SRH- too early to tell. But Pandey pisses me off. RR, Punjab- Nice game. The international players on both sides were side kicks to the Indian players today. Rahul, Hooda, Samson, Parag - nice batting. Sarkaria, Shami, Arshdeep held their own with the ball. Can’t tell if they can contend based on this one game, but the game was good !

KKR and DC looked pretty strong.. DC didn't even have their premier bowlers.

RR can do well if they get their act together and probably have Archer back

CSK, SRH each have one weak suit

MI and RCB look rusty.. MI can pull back quickly.. not sure about RCB

PBKS need to repeat their heroics every game.. Both their quicks got carted around.. Don't think they'll have enough gas in the tank to take them to the playoffs

Too early to say anything ...Too early

Few pointers

  1. KKR- Triptahi n Rana needs to be tested by teams with pace
  2. MI- they know what they are doing
  3. CSK- quickly needs to figure out some new players who can fit
  4. RCB - batting is strength so use it as an attacking tool
  5. Punjab- came in with right plan now stick to it, dont start chop n changing after one loss
  6. SRH- rework that batting order and get khaleel in bowling, use sandeep only for matchups
  7. Dc- dnt waste hetymer
  8. Rr- pray that Archer comes in 2nd half

Punjab won't win anything for sure, you cannot win the tournament with just 5 bowlers. Add to that they will under utilize Pooran this season, which is criminal.

Delhi is a sure shot top 4 contender.

CSK has disappointed with lack of balance in the first game. They need to sort out their batting order & play Ngidi for sure. I ll not rule them out just yet.

Rajasthan should end this stupid tactic of playing Buttler at 4. Bring him back to open & their side ll be even more dangerous. Sanju has bowling options at his disposal, need to use them smartly. I think they ll just miss out because they will keep on wasting one of best T20 batsman & their bowling in absence of Archer lacks impact.

SRH, borefest of a team. I hope they don't make it to top 4.

Mumbai, well top 4 confirmed but spin bowling looks an apparent weakness. If Hardik doesn't start bowling soon, they will have an uneven ride.

KKR is only team capable of challenging Mumbai. Gill is the key for them, he has to up his game, if he does his job, KKR look very strong. Strong top 4 contender

RCB, the perennial chokers led by choking legend himself. Their bowling looks absolutely tripe & batting looks dependent on Maxwell & AB for any kind of momentum. They need Richardson to play instead of Christian because they have enough batting already & DDP-Kohli partnership can be their Achilles heel, if both play at same pace. Under Virat Kohli, they are not winning any tournament.
