Dharmatma (1975) - Feroz Khan, Hema Malini, Rekha, Premnath, Madan Puri, Jeevan, Danny, Ranjeet, Dara Singh, Imtiaz,  etc.

Watched it after a long time, bumped into my top 10 Bollywood entertaining films.

Poistives:

  • Best Bollywood adaptation of Godfather
  • Probably has the best Bollywood background score
  • Excellent songs
  • Feroz Khan, a style icon. Superb direction by him
  • Afghanistan locations
  • Everyone's role and acting is good

It was the 2nd biggest hit after Sholay in 1975, said to have run along with Sholay at many venues:

Top-grossing films

The top ten grossing films at the Indian Box Office in 1975:[1]

1975
rank
Title Cast
1. Sholay Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Mac Mohan, Sachin
2. Dharmatma Feroz Khan, Hema Malini, Rekha, Prem Nath, Danny Denzongpa, Ranjeet, Jeevan
3. Jai Santoshi Maa Kanan Kaushal, Bharat Bhushan, Ashish Kumar, Anita Guha
4. Deewaar Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi
5. Sanyasi Manoj Kumar, Hema Malini

^ Sanyasi is pretty good too

As I said, it probably has the best Bollywood background score, sporting soul touching tracks such as:

^ Mostly used in the Afghanistan sequences. Dharmatma (character) has his own theme

Have you guys seen this recently?

Feroz Khan was a very talented director. Till 80s, perhaps.

His first film as a director, Apradh, was pretty good. It had racing sequences in Europe. Of course, Dharmatma & Qurbani are big blockbusters and all time classics. Dharmatma took his career to new highs

If I am not wrong, he used to put everything he had (in terms of $$$) on the table for his films so it is good to see that he got good rewards for taking such risks

He was lion allright. Self made man. Liberal in truest. Some of the stuff from Qurbani still looks so good. The jump cuts and zoom ins.

Feroz is such a style icon that is difficult to imagine anyone else in his stylish roles such as in Qurbani ... Look at him in this song from Dharmatma below - dressed in blue, the dame is in contrasting yellow, and the SL in the background:

Sorry, zen. This is a laughable movie, songs are great, okay for a Hindi movie, but not a masterpiece to be compared to Godfather. Locales in 70s Afghanistan  is superb, Rekha and Hemamalini look good., but that’s it.

Sarkar 1 is still the best adaptation of Godfather for an Indian movie

I would not compare it to Godfather as Bollywood films are made differently but will hold Dharmatma as the best adaption of Godfather by Bollywood ... Sarkar was good too but not something I would revisit ... Dharmatma, I can watch multiple times

Forgot about it. Yes, stand corrected and it has repeat watch value. Sarkar BGM is atrocious with the Govinda Govinda chants.

Kay Kay Menon was the best thing about Sarkar. I need to see Zulm Ki Hukumat someday where Shakti Kapoor plays Sonny and Govinda plays Michael :p:

You missed Rajnikant  (Sonny) and Amir Khan (Michael) in Aatank Hi Aatank. It is worse than ZKH.

If I have to roughly list my current top 10 entertaining masala  (paise vasool without too much rona dhona) Bollywood films (not necessarily award winners) ... In the order of release:

Awara

Shree 420

Johnny Mera Naam (not seen recently)

Dharmatma

Sholay (not seen recently)

Don

Qurbani

Vidhata (not seen recently)

Karma (not seen recently)

That's 9. Can't think of the 10th atm :hmm:

btw, it is said that Premnath's Dharmatma character has shades of real matka king Ratan Khatri:

That Kamal Hassan film presumably Nayakan is not Bollywood though. It was remade as Dayayan, which was not as good as Dharmatma

Don’t care about Bollywood. I said best adaptation of GF for an “Indian” movie.

I have not watched Nayakan so can’t comment. If I am not wrong, one of the conditions to remake Nayakan was that it should be adapted as is without changes. Therefore, Dayavan could not be adapted to the tastes of the Bollywood audiences at that time.
