Hollywood actresses from the golden age

I am not making a laundry list but listing a selected few (see poll). I have not listed Garbo, Dietrich, etc. Who is your favorite? And why? 

 

 

As for me, I have gone with 

a) Grace Kelly (Hollywood) -> I liked her performances in Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder, Rear Window & To Catch a Thief. Rear Window is by and large shot in a room where she brought in glamor ... Audrey Hepburn misses out 

b) Catherine Deneuve (Europe) -> Any film (including Umbrellas of Cherbourg) that I have watched of her, she has been impressive in it

Kelly became Princess of Monaco and Deneuve is French so there is French area connection. It could be because I studied in France too

I know it is difficult to pick one, but the idea is to somehow arrive at a decision  .  ... I relied on French connection

Went with Audrey.  She’s graceful and a wonderful actress, Have seen BatTiffany’s multiple times with SO
 

Sofia Loren acted in a lot of EU movies before Hollywood .

I wanted to include Loren in Europe first but unlike others on that list she has a good Hollywood/English films resume and can be there

Charade, How to steal a million, and Roman Holiday (hope my iTunes version gets upgraded to 4K HDR soon so I can revisit it then. Paramount released a new transfer with Paramount Presents which has a 4K DI so an upgrade on iTunes is due) are among my favorites ... I also like Sabrina ... I do not recall the Nun's Story so may try to revisit it 

 

 

PS Paramount Presents Roman Holiday (has a 4k DI but released on Blu-ray)

Btw, Hollywood’s golden age period is roughly from 1920s to 1960s. 60s was the last hurrah for many golden age stars like Cary Grant, who came out with films like Charade. Hitchcock gave Psycho and The Birds. David Lean gave Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago … 60s also saw the rise of the European new wave 

 

For Bollywood, the golden age is roughly from 1950s to 1970s (can be stretched to early to mid 80s as directors like Raj Kapoor still gave hits like Prem Rog and Ram Teri Ganga Maili)

I saw this documentary Audrey on Netflix.  Very interesting account about her personal life. I always love her in movies. Wait until dark ( a blind woman vs 3 murderers in her house Great thriller,  Another under-rated social drama is The Children's hour ( came 60 years back ) where a student accuses two of her teachers (shirley mclaine, audrey hepburn) as lesbians. Very powerful film.  Roman holiday,  Breakfast at Tiffany's.  Charade which was later made into an Hindi movie Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne. She was a freaking superstar.  A likable actress. 

 

Grace Kelly, Liz Taylor were beauty queens.  JOan fontaine an excellent next door actress. And ofcourse Ingrid bergman. 

 

I always liked Natalie wood. A different kind of beauty.

Natalie Wood was very good in This Property is Condemned. I have not seen the film recently so do not know if it has aged well

Jean Simmons was another good actress from that era starring in films such as Black Narcissus, Hamlet, The Blue Lagoon (original), The Big Country, Spartacus, etc. 

 

 

From the European section, Brigitte Bardot is legendary too for playing those wild/carefree and/or comedy roles:
