Will Root end up with a higher average than Kohli?

Root is technically a better player than all the other 3. Smith has great hand eye coordination. It allowed him to adapt to different pitches. Root's method is fool proof.  Rat is a frontfoot plonker. Ability to pick the length is the key for a batsman. But when Rat had good reflexes he could play everything on the frontfoot. Now he is unable to do.  Kane is the weakest of all.

I don't think he is technically better than peak smith. latter could score everywhere whereas even peak root has issues vs bounce (in Oz)

root is best among 4 beyond doubt . his technique and ease with which he scores is mindboggling

also he is youngest of 4 and incredibly consistent across world

1. he is not best among 4 "beyond doubt". a case can be made for smith as much as root, if not more

2. technique for root may be better, but smith has scored just as heavily in most parts of the world; root, in comparison, has done quite poorly in Oz despite touring multiple times.

3. root being youngest of 4 has no bearing on who is the best (just that he will score the most runs)

4. incredibly consistent - smith is beginning to fade now, but he did the same as well

right now, root is having a purple patch while smith is in decline. however, if you go back some years ago, smith was dominant whereas root was no. 3 of the fab 4.

I rate Root very highly, but not as much as smith. this is just about batsmanship. as a person, root is much better than smith the cheater

smith does bat in flattest pitches of australia while root in most bowler friendly pitches of england

also he is much younger, so maybe young age inconsistency earlier

why don't you look at who averages higher in eng then out of root & smith?

root's issue was not being too young, but one of not being ruthless enough. he has fortunately turned it around.

he will need to perform at this level for 3-4 more years to exceed smith

Smith, Kohli and Root are all time greats of the game.

Williamson is a country great.

In Tests, the order is :

Smith > Root> Kohli = Kane

kohli is not in the same level if just tests are considered.

The gap is increasing. Would have never though root would comeback this way and become soo good. He is gonna challenge even smith now for upcoming years.

Not even a contest. We are still hung up on his all format records that too happened mostly long back. If we strictly talk about Test format Kohli is way behind these guys.

Root never had any major technical issues (apart from slight issue vs pace+bounce combined), so he was always likely to make a comeback, but the magnitude of the second coming has been great

Seems Kohli and Kane are tied at the lowest  spot in this race as of now in tests, if any Kane a bit higher than Kohli.

But over all it still has to be  Kohli, Smith , Root & Kane in that order. But Kohli needs to regain his usual self very badly .

Other wise , very high chance of him losing the spot by the time he  hangs up his boot. ..

I will put Root at Ponting and Chappell level in Tests.

His performance vs the legendary Indian bowling attack was a treat to watch in 2021 England - India series where an in-form Rohit barely managed to hit half the runs that Root scored.

chappell > root = punter (or maybe root > punter) in my mind. but it is close
