Likely Trend in Pace bowling in coming T20WC & Beyond & pace bowling selections

Foresee an emerging trend in the forthcoming T20WC and beyond in Pace bowling at the middle and death .
Not something totally new , but something which would be in more focus it seems .

The new trend seem to use pacers who bowl  with extreme pace of 90+ Mph and use change of pace as the main weapon and use lot more shorter balls  both at pace & at slower pace . These will be mixed with few yorkers in between. They also  try to avoid bowling in the hitting zone of the batsmen so will keep the deliveries wider and slower .The reliance on Yorkers would be lesser as even a small error in length will lead to boundary balls  Many bowlers seem to be  ready to give a 1or 2 rather than a six by not getting  the yorker right. Also the dew factor in most of the matches could be another big factor in going for slower balls with some express jaffas in between rather than Yorkers, which is even more difficult  to bowl with a wet ball at pace.

The most important factor in this trend is the ability of the bowler to bowl at 90+ Mph .

That makes the slower balls very effective as batsmen cannot make the adjustment and hit as they can do if bowler is bowling at a lesser speed than 90+.

We most probably see these tactics used in T20WC by England & NZ as they seem to have readily available players to execute this strategy Will not be surprised if ENG picks Tymal Mills for T20WC . NZ have Lockie & Adam Milnes .

Thus the combination of  a very good T20 team in future would be:
1. Aggressive Openers to best utilse PP.
2. An anchor to hold who is a very good player of spin.
3. atleast 3 dare devil MO who can play near 170-200 strike rate even though they may just play 15-20 balls each.
4. Quality wrist spinners /mystery type who will turn it both ways .
5. Pacers who can bowl at 90+ and very adept at change up slower balls without change in arm speed rotation to control backend of the match.
6.Other bowlers who can hit long.

Teams most nearer  matching these combo would be ENG  & NZ and my bet is that they are 2 most probable finalists

assuming ICC will see to it that they will have mostly good pitches with decent bounce for the WC.

Think this trend will go beyond this T20 WC and slowly percolate to 50 overs too in future.

Not sure if Adam Milne can bowl 90 mph+ nowadays. Whenever I have seen him, he is usually 82 mph to 89 mph range.

Bowled 92 mph in the Hundred finals last night. He is getting better after a long battle with injuries

Where various teams stand as of now  re: such express pacers very good at change up pace stuff .

1. New Zealand -  Already have Lokie Ferguson & Adam Milnes in the rank. Most probably we will see some new pacers emerge from NZ in the near future in simliar mould.

2. Eng - Archer once back will be a ready made option, They may also try Mills may be  in the next 2 T20 Wcs.   Wood also provides an option but not good at death and slower balls .  They are trying with Garton , not sure he can reach such high speed .

3. Aus -  Starc could  be the one who can but slower ones not that good . Same goes with Cummins . But they can make necessary changes . Quite possible some one new will come up.

4. Pak-   Have decent shot with Wahab Riaz & Shaheen Afridi. Not great with change ups but good with yorkers . Expect Wahab to be picked for next T20WC.

5.  India - Cannot think of beyond Bhumra . Even he is not 90+ most of the time and his slower one are fuller & off cutters . Little predictable as shown by Kane & company. But compensates very well with great yorkers most of the time.  For India it is best if they use someone like Natarajan for next T20WCS  who is very good at yorkers as we may not see 90+ thunderbolts coming up any soon  with very good variations.

One reason could be bowlers from other countries solely aim to become short format bowlers while in India most aspire to play all 3 formats . Hence not enough focus on short format skill development .

As of now, Ferguson, Archer, Wood, Starc, Wahab and Nortje are the only true 90 mph+ options in the world. Probably Hasnain too. Not sure if Wahab is doing it nowadays though.

There are many others like Cummins, Bumrah, Rabada , Shaheen, Rauf who sometime bowl 90 mph+ and sometimes don't.  Same with Milne and Mills. Same with Prasidh and Saini too.

Milne bowled with good pace in recent 100 tourney & was highly successful probably would be 3rd pacer in WT20 after Ferguson & Boult.

Best India can expect is..  Bumrah along with Siraj.  These two could be very very handy in UAE as both of them are hard to hit.

One of D Chahar & Shardul has to be there.

But fully expect Trundlers like Nattu Bhuvi to sneak in over someone like Siraj...  As Trundlers are highly respected in India & have many fans & media backing.

This is a country Where Talents like Mavi Tyagi are ignored & fellows like KM Asif do not even make it to IPl sides.

UAE pitches (especially after IPL) will be slow and will turn. Pace on the ball will be easiest to hit. Slower balls and spinners will dominate this time. Bangladesh, with Fizz and the spinners, are grossly underestimated. They can seriously challenge NZ and even Pakistan for that semi-final berth. We will see pitches closer to the series in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh recently. 90mph bowlers sometimes become easier to hit in these conditions where bowlers just tend to bowl slower balls consistently. Any pace on the ball actually makes it easier for batsmen to time the ball.

I generally hate to see Rohit open the batting when par score is 190-200 but if my above prediction about slow turners is right and par score is more in the range of 140-160, he will be key in negating the spinners. Top 3 of Rohit, KL and Kohli might just become a blessing in disguise if they can do their usual - average 35-40 with SR of 130-140.

There is no guarantee for that...  Last IPl in UAE Bumrah Boult Rabada were among top wicket takers &  Archer was I guess player of the tournament.

Nortje was absolutely ripping sides in Abu Dhabi with his express pace.

T20 world cup is a short tourney.  With Three venues I expect good pitches regardless.

Sri lanka had only one venue in recent series.

India need to bring in more 90 mph+ pacers with white balls skills.

Bumrah does it in some spells.

High demand , no supply  at 150 !

We  have more of lower 140s , hardly anyone  coming near 150.  Those who were at 140s have come to high 130s mainly due to Injury.

Plus none right now adept at change up and variations skill setwise.

At the same time the level of big hitting by batsmen has gone to insane levels for length balls in the ark & does not deviate much  by  some of the short format specialists -Buttler, Livingstone, Bairstow, Pooran,Pollard, Maxi even newbies like Glen Phillips, Fin Allen .

India has too may holes to fix and hence very difficult to say they can win either of the 2 T20WCs on a Good pitch . fixing all those gaps in a very short time wont be possible.

Only a very good day on  that particular day &  rather average day by opposition  may give us a sniff of a chance.

Real deal is

- Bowling 90+ PLUS very good skills with slower variations  OR  capability of bowling some 90+ PLUS very good with yorkers & other smarts.

- Hence will put Archer ,Starc, Rabada, Bhumra  at the elite level.

- 2nd level - Lokie, Mills ,Wahab , Milnes, Nortje , Shaheen (though bit inconsistent but high ceiling ) as they can bowl near 90 when needed and

very good change up skills ( Lokie, Milnes, Mills ) or  good yorkers ( Wahab, Nortje) .

Rest -  lot more things need to fall in place . Right now only occasional burst of pace in mid 140s but lack finer skills either in change ups or Yorkers.

We cannot go by what we saw in IPL.  In a tourney like WC , ICC will see to it that most of the times they will provide good pitches . They will not use same pitches to have more wear & tear especially KO & onward matches . I think in UAE there more than 8 pitches which are available. And pitches are managed by some of the best curators.  We should expect good pitches .

Most of the Indian quicks are 135 k to 145 k default.  Bumrah, Prasidh, Saini and Tyagi can bowl 140 k to 150 k in certain spells.

If Tyagi and Prasidh work on their slower balls and yorkers  (  both have good, accurate, quick yorkers including wider yorkers  )  then they can be a handful. Plus both can bowl quicker  as well as slower bouncers.

All this won't happen before this World T20 but maybe before the next one they can improve their white ball skills.

Issue is that both of them are our best potential replacements in Tests. Going for these T20 gigs will mess up their Test bowling skills . They should first get test match skills perfected with consistency.

I would rather hope they are considered more for Test & 50 overs .

Even Siraj should not change things too much else we may get a messed up Siraj in tests. May be just polish the skill in making the ball deviate every time ( not easy with a Kookabura ball ) & perfect Yorker and widish full yorkers .

May be among slower ones just try

- the wide full length in dippers for lefties going beyond the reach of batsmen.

- wider yorkers /wide leg cutters for righties .

All these pacers end up playing the IPL.  Which means they will invariably have to focus on their white ball skills.

The quick stump directed yorker and the quick bouncer will come in handy in test matches too.

The only thing to guard against is not focussing too much on slower balls.  (  Something which can mess up the normal ball release )

True

We saw in the 2020 edition of the IPL that UAE surfaces with a lot of pace and bounce help true fast bowlers a lot, and players like Nortjia archer Cummins did quite well there.

The icc will certainly ensure that the surfaces in the uae are either flat or have a good pace and bounce. Nobody wants to see sluggish surfaces dominated by spin bowling
