“Toss is important but not everything” (T20WC 2021)

Cricket is about taking on the challenges on the field and playing  good positive cricket in various situations. Batting or bowling first are different flavours of those challenges.

There is a reason why avid mountaineers go to climb Mt. Everest rather than just go to the nearest hill in the neighbourhood. If you take sports as a career, you also sign up to take on extreme challenges. If you want a relatively easy game, there is always the backyard. Sports is not played to keep viewers feel comfortable on their TV.

Yes, there can be unfortunate situations where dew can play a role but teams should not feel overwhelmed when they lose the toss and bat first. You already have plans on what to do if you bat first or bowl first. Focus on following the plan and its execution on the field.

If you bat first, look to bat out the opposition. If you bowl first, look to bowl out the opposition. Throw crawling to the avg score or restricting the opposition (favorite terms of many commentators) out of the window. As they say if you do great things, you get good results; if you do good things, you get average results; if you do average things, you get poor results; and so on.

To plan for a great score, teams need to look at average winning scores in the first innings (while removing the outliers), along with the total/range that has generated at least 2/3rd wins for teams scoring in that vicinity (the “par”),  and not overall average scores which would include both low totals (where teams lost by batting badly) and high totals. There would be outliers as well.

BOL to all the teams heading to the knockouts!

So far only Eng against SL and WI against BD, both teams are minnows. Ignoring AFG against Scot/Nam.

if Eng can bat first and defend 160 , I will agree

Afghanistan almost gave Pakistan a scare. NZ also fought well. India has a history of choking Pakistan in ICC world cups. First time we looked toothless.

Not speaking of effort. but outcomes. Win toss, field and chase successfully has happened 14 out of 19 matches , including PakvNam match today. All 5 occasions against minnow sides

If you put up a total around 175 it is defendable even under lights by teams with good bowling attacks.  110/130/151 doesn't cut it.

Not really, just look at England. Only Mills from their main xi is below 30. More than youngsters, t20 is a format where power and range hitting, unorthodox and unconventional batting and bowling trump traditional textbook batting and bowling more often than not. I think West Indies vs India semi final in the last World Cup was the best example of this

Generally, that suits them

Do you think we have done anything worth mentioning in t20s with our seniors?

India will do well once we blood youngsters in shortest format, offcourse if some seniors are doing well there is no point dropping them but here its not the case
