Actually for a change I do agree with these Rohit fan boys. Hes been our best test bat last 18 months, opening in tests is the most difficult batting position in cricket and its worth a lot more than middle order runs. There is a reason why you wont find too many openers, especially from SC avg more than 50.

I really appreciate posters like you who will atleast temporarily acknowledge facts for what they are even if they have some biases or like/dislikes (like every human being).

India need to build a solid middle order in Tests. The current one of Pujara, Kohli and Rahane is done and dusted. Kohli will not go so soon but we need to look past Rahane and Pujara and get some young players in the X1. Washington Sundar needs to get more opportunities and needs to play as a batsman who can bowl in the Test side. He looks solid with great technique. India need to identify good middle order bats and openers as well. We have Shubman and KL for a while. Rohit has been our best Test batsman over the last 2 years and he has probably couple of years left.

The problem for India is the form of Virat Kohli which has been abysmal in Tests. Rahane scores runs once in 10-15 innings, not good enough and Pujara, well not sure what to make of him. He played good knocks in Australia and one good knock at home against England and one in England but overall has been poor. We can see in the stats how poor they have been. This home series should be the last straw, if they don't score runs they need to be given the boot. They have served India well but some hard decisions have to be taken. Rahul Dravid has been with Indian junior teams for a long time now and he should be able to identify young players well for all formats. I am hoping to see lots of changes in the coming years.

Boo *ing hoo, let's remove the India tests since they're the best conditions (new ball) for openers :hitler:

What new ball . India got rolled over 145 runs. Rohit made 66 runs out of it. Root picked 5 wickets.

That's one innings, what about the rest 5 or 6 in India? Pretty sure batting, at the top, is almost always easy in the subcontinent! This is why Hayden & Cook have good records here.

In the first Test wasn't easy. Archer bowled brilliantly upfront. Also in the second innings they opened with Leach who got enough purchase.

So what, those were still easy batting conditions! Second innings was again easier with the new ball. Are you seriously debating why batting in the middle/lower middle order is worse in India? Do you recall Sehwag's record in India, as opposed to say VVS or Ganguly & do you think it was down only to luck?

You sound like Indian openers consistenly produce 100 partnership for opening wicket. Only 2 wickets away from middle order. Fast bowlers are useful only when the ball is new in India and extremely old (provided you have reverse swinging capability. Indian middle order simply feasted on spin bowling and tired seamers with old ball.  Even against England highest opening partnership was 49 not out in an easy chase.

Opening partnerships for the last 5 years.

issue has been ability of coping with swing and seam,in sa and nz they were tough conditions ,also since 2017-18 we have seen decline in form of our batters ,may be reflexes are slowing down, even in this t20wc moment the conditions had bit of help whole batting unit was exposed

Thanks man, I have nothing personal against Rohit infact if you go back to my posts in his early days I was backing him to be a test great even when he was failing badly as a mo in LOIs . Obviously that changed once he kept getting chances and I still think it was unfair irrespective the talent he possessed.  Any other players career would have ended, but instead he was promoted as an opener .There are other things like slow batting approach in LOis which I will continue to criticize

I am not saying he did not do well but players in their best form do a lot more. Talking about SENA tours. In the series in Aus, there were better batsmen (also missed the pink ball test). Went missing in NZ. Only in Eng, he did relatively well (Guys like Kohli have hit 3-4 100s in a series in Eng; Pujara hit 3 100s in Aus and almost single handedly made Ind competitive. Even in the next tour, he hit 3 50s in the last 4 innings, while producing a fighting knock in one of the first two tests iirc).

As for me, in this period, Sundar shines despite the small sample size in terms of reliability where he not only averages 60+ but also has a 50% ratio of 50+ scores.

Rohit has been good too. In terms of average ahead of some of the others, who are still competitive despite not at their best (Being ahead of others who are not at their best but still as much competitive is not saying much). At their best, these top batsmen were much ahead in their best series overseas.

I agree with a few things you said, if it wer to me I would have kept Rohit out of the test team more so cos of his age than anything else. We will soon have a problem of finding a opener in 2-3 years.

Where he has my respect though, is actually opting to open in Tests. Am sure he  has enough influence to take a easier middle order spot and in his current form could have inflated his test stats batting at 5-6, but even in England where no one gave him a chance he dint hide behind the top order, instead opened and did very well . Let's not forget he is not a specialist opener, while I a problem with seniors hogging the top order spots in LOIs it's exact opposite in tests . As good as pujara and Virat played in those series, they would not have scored big hundreds had they been asked to open.

Compared to what Rohit had done in the past and now, it is an improvement, no doubt ... btw, Pujara has been a virtual opener in many games overseas. An e.g. Adelaide 2018/9 for e.g. Link
