Look even Kuldeep is hanging around effortlessly with that approach. Last 3 years record of Pujara. there is no defense for this. average of 28.55 at a strike rate of 34.67. A 50 here and there means very little. Look at that SR other than pathetic avg.

Sandeep99 Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Pujara is a necessity in the Indian team with useless batters all around.. Someone needs to keep wickets even if they play a slow pace..

I don't get this fascination with batting strike rate in test cricket. People who want good SR can watch ODIs and T20s.

Not covid but he hardly got to bat on pattas. Mostly batted on raging turners or low scoring matches in SENA. Although they missed out on a few pattas which they got. There is no sense in following bazball approach in test cricket unless it suits your strength. England will fail and will be exposed when it travels to Australia India or even south Africa. It can bully teams on good days but in test cricket they will falter. They played on home pitches and have won with some luck and on the pak flat pitches but haven't faced true test. I am a big fan of Pujara and the way he grinds the opposition bowlers to dust. It is not sexy but it is test cricket England already beat South Africa with Bazball in SA But the series in Ind and Aus with this Naya England team should be fun

Why? lot of batsmen scored runs during this phase. That is an excuse. Only our middle order 3 went missing. With or without COVID Pujara has been on the downhill since that Australian tour. Since AUstralian tour in 2018/19 In the year 2019 after OZ tour Agarwal 67.70 Rahane 78.00 Kohli 73.62 Rohit 92.66 Jadeja 59.83 Pujara 31.40 Vihari 74.75 Rahul 25.33 raki05 1

First of all he dint always bat like that as someone posted earlier his SR was 41 and now it's 34 in past 3 years, he has habbit of defending bad balls which motivate bowler to bowl at same length. He brings bad bowlers also in rhythm his 20-30 score after playing 150 balls won't make any difference where ball swings entire day. You need to score at every scoring opportunities. Pitches in SA, eng demands to score with good sr when ball gets soft and don't swing much but due to his style of play he ensure india doesn't get advantage of soft balls in that passage of play.

CoverDrive Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Nothing wrong with approach. But with time best players age and get less effective. Pujara’s approach helped us win very important matches

Pujara’s approach helped us win very important matches His last century came on a nice flat SCG wicket in Jan 3, 2019. Since then not a single century. Almost 4 years gone. He was 30 years old last time he had a 100. Right about the time players attain peak. Since then last 4 years steady decline. We are not Bangladesh, Pakistan to cling on to ancient players as there are no replacements available. We just have to move on. We cannot wait to accidentally discover players like Sundar. India left out Pujara for home series against SL. We comfortably beat them. Why did he come back?
putrevus Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 SR is not the problem for Pujara but as number 3 batsman, you are expected to score big hundreds, if you are not doing that job then you should not be in the team. Samething applies to Kohli and openers. Australian series should be end for both if they don't perform. I will give them pass from 2020 to till now as we were in weird times and it is highly impossible to assess the impact of Covid bubbles on players.

In a home series literally any first class bully from India can outperform Pujara. His record at home in the last 3 yeasr is worse than Ashwin's record. Averaging 22. Shreyas Iyer, Sundar all have outdone him. When ROhit is back who will they drop?
vvvslaxman Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Even with ultra tuk tuk Pujara averages 22 at home in the last 3 years. Others score faster, also average better. I understand the point of "strike rate is not important in tests". Someone who have that mentality should have very high averages as he plays a safe cricket and lets others take care of risk taking, dominating bowlers, putting bowlers off their comfort zone. That is certainly not the case. India has a home series where Pujara is not at all needed . Then India tours Windies. You don't need pujara there either. Our next SENA tour is in december/january 2023 SA. Pujara is most likely to be weaker than he is now. Already struggles with poor reflexes. If India has any vision they should start grooming a young MO batsman. We cannot afford to carry both Kohli and Pujara. Then we have this KL Rahul who sucks even at his supposed peak. Rohit frequently goes missing.

David averaged under 30 in SA, if you take our one good series in Australia against a B grade bowling attack without Mcgrath and Warne he would have averaged under 25 in Australia , in SL also he under performed very badly .Same goes with VVS he stunk in many countries. Yet both of them played over 290 tests.Everybody scores at home and why are we holding that against Pujara. Pujara was an assest in in India.I would not have recalled him into test cricket after SA. But after being recalled you have to give them Australian series. It is vital we have some experience when facing Aussies as ICC finals might be at stake. If we are out of reckoning for ICC finals, I would kick both Kohli and Pujara out.

Those days West Indies/Srilanka were not minnows. Pakistan had a decent bowling unit. Heck Even ZImbabwe was a good team. And the Australian side was an ATG side. SA bowling was top notch. If Pujara faced Alan Donald in kingsmead of 90s he will be sh***ing bricks. You cannot possibly compare Dravid's ability to play swing and bounce compared to Pujara can you? Pujara is better against spin relatively. That's it. He was. Most recently he is as bad as rahane. Pujara had a very very short peak. That's it.

This guy literally put his body on line to get two most famous results for India facing much more hostile bowling than Dravid ever did in any of his 161 tests. Dravid was part of the team for 66 allout and 100 allout in SA. As you correctly pointed out the problem with Indian lineup is they never really had prolonged peak. Dravid also never had prolonged peak , his best years were 2002 to 2005. Dravid is better overall player but I would take Pujara over Dravid for home series against any bowling attack.
