maniac Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 I don t know mixed feelings, is this a throw back to the vintage purity of test cricket in the day and age of T20 and franchise leagues? is it evidence that there is still a place for the old school grinder who is boring as hell but keeps making valuable contributions more often than not like Chetan Chauhan, Jeff Boycott, Ravi Shastri, Sanjay Manjrekar, Misbah ul Haq, Chanderpaul (later years), Samaraweera Jonathon Trott etc ? Just then I see England play test cricket. Once I switch back to watching Pujara, it makes me wonder if any sport is worth playing this way ever? Even if you are watching chess or a marathon race you see the intensity of incredible athletes or geniuses. Just blocking/ leaving a ball with stone face and chopping a ball for the odd single is not what I want to see for sport. Mad respect for Pujara for his contributions in some important wins over the years but maybe about time this style of play should be phased out. I am not saying there is no place for 50(175) balls in test cricket. There always will be but there is no place for such innings in every match on every pitch against every opposition. What do you think? vvvslaxman, raki05 and SRT100 1 2
zen Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 (edited) India is not playing Bazball at the moment … To play that, it would need a new set of players with a new captain. And once a move to Bazball happens with proper vision and planning including mastering it in LOIs, where India’s seniors can play like test cricket relatively speaking (It is not like copying a Hollywood film), it could take some time for the team to get settled. By that time, some new trend could come in too (so there are chances that Ind could usually be playing catch up) As for the current test, apart from Pant everyone batted at a SR of 40-50 on Day 1. Lowest was KL’s among those who played a certain number of balls to settle down. Without Pujara’s 90, India could have been in deeper trouble. Mountains out of molehills? PS Also watching test cricket in every type of condition is not everyone’ cup of tea! Edited December 15, 2022 by zen

vvvslaxman Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Pujara is getting way because of the other bozos. otherwise he is not as good as most of the Indian domestic guy. Exhibit A his Ranji performance, India A performance where others outperform him. Pujara played 2019/20 Ranji Trophy Pujara 6 matches 575 runs 63;88 avge 52.75 strike rate By comparison Sarfraz khan 6 matches 928 runs 154.66 avge 78.64 strike rate 2022 stats Sarfrazh khan 6 matches 982 runs 122.75 avge 69.54 strike rate Why do we get stuck with someone who averages under 30 for the last 3 years. We only look at his boring 50s while ignoring the failures. There is no way one can average under 30 for 3 years with 0 centuries can get to keep his place despite playing uber-safety cricket. express bowling, Norman, Clarke and 1 other 2 2
nevada Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 I thought his exploits in limited overs County cricket would inject some briskness into his batting but apparently not! Prime Pujara is definitely a relevant style of batter in current day test cricket. Declined Pujara is not.. raki05 1
Serpico Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 (edited) I would love Pujara if he still made daddy hundreds. I don't care if he made them slowly because his style of blocking and frustrating the bowlers is good watch if the bowling team is good. I can watch him block Cummins and Hazelwood all day But present day pujara is finished, he can barely make a 50 Edited December 15, 2022 by Serpico
Vijy Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 pujara is still good for 50s, but scoring 100s has become too difficult a task. most players in current test squad, barring Pants, do not seem capable of scoring test 100s at the moment
raki05 Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 (edited) Lol this guy has started giving fals hopes to some. Looks like people forget his diabolical performance during last overseas tours , where he made to look like a tailender. Him along with other seniors needs to go out but I know these leeches would use this opportunity to stay pad during domestic season. Other seniors performance are so bad that even an 89 against ultra minnow has been touted as herculean effort. This guy , Kel and Rohit are done even kooli better to move on. straighttalk Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 In t20 or even odis following England's approach makes sense. There is no sense in following bazball approach in test cricket unless it suits your strength. England will fail and will be exposed when it travels to Australia India or even south Africa. It can bully teams on good days but in test cricket they will falter. They played on home pitches and have won with some luck and on the pak flat pitches but haven't faced true test. I am a big fan of Pujara and the way he grinds the opposition bowlers to dust. It is not sexy but it is test cricket

All his blocking would have been useless had he held on to it. raki05 1

Exactly Shakib didn't bowl a lot due to injury. Gill could have very well done the same tuk tuking if he had not attempted that lap sweep. raki05 1
singhvivek141 Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Pujara's way of batting is helpful if we have inform batters in and around him who can ease off the pressure to scoring runs. Then also, Pujara after reaching to a milestone (say 30/40) need to up the ante and score with atleast an SR of 55-60 once set. Test Cricket is about scoring as many runs as possible, Australia during its prime used to do that, playing a blockathon of 50(175) won't take you anywhere. Make no mistake, ability to block is indeed useful when you're way behind in the match and had to save the test match. But during the first inns, once you have survived the initial phase...in order to keep the scoreboard moving you need to open the field. raki05 and Mosher 2
Pollack Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Pujara makes test cricket ugly because he even blocks poor deliveries and his approach is the same irrespective of the pitch. Dravid was defensive too but he made sure to put away bad deliveries. Dame with Laxman. Pujara is a phattu batsman. Is he still useful? Yes. Laaloo, singhvivek141, nevada and 2 others 5
Majestic Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 (edited) Bazball is only played by England as of now. So, it isn't really the day and age of Bazball yet for the rest of the World. Pujara is a fine batsman but his problem is he blocks overpitched deliveries of fast bowlers too. He has no intent of scoring runs vs pace and he shows intent when facing spin only. I am not sure about his game outside Asia. Edited December 15, 2022 by Majestic Lord 1

Unless there is evidence that Pujara has no replacement in domestic his tuk tuk runs against lowest ranked Test side means very little. Look even Kuldeep is hanging around effortlessly with that approach. Last 3 years record of Pujara. there is no defense for this. average of 28.55 at a strike rate of 34.67. A 50 here and there means very little. raki05 1
