Hockey World Cup 2023- India

Hope Graham Reid has some ace up his sleeve when it comes to PCs, can't depend on just the one person. Even though the others (Amit Rohildas, Varun Kumar, Nilam) aren't at that level, we can compensate via smart variations.

Don't want to see Varun Kumar take PCs in crunch moments, have never seen that guy score. Got lots of hype when he first came into the scene, but only disappointment till now. Jarmanpreet another concern, got lots of backing but too slow and indecisive for this level. He was slow when I last saw him in Asian Champions Trophy, now imagine him against these gora teams.

This squad is weaker than the Tokyo one, missing out 3 big names in Rupinder Pal, SV Sunil, Birendra Lakra...former two are irreplaceable, imagine peak Harmanpreet and Rupinder in double battery for PCs, or the winger Sunil with his pace/acceleration setting up counterplay from nothing.

Btw hope everyone knows the format of the tournament. So all group leaders directly qualify for quarter finals after group stage.

Those who finish second and third across the groups go to a cross over and they play amongst each other to go to quarter finals.

so lets say India in group D finishes first they ll qualify for quarter finals. But if they finish second they ll play 3rd placed team in group C ( Chile or Malaysia) to reach quarter finals. If India finishes third in group stage they ll play the runners up in group C ( most probably Kane Williamsons country) in a knock out match to reach quarterfinals.

pros of this format is even if you finish third you still have a chance to go and win the tournament. Cons is you need to play an extra match to go to qrtr finals even if you finish 2nd in the group.

Politics is what developed the game in Odisha. The personal commitment of the CM and his party ensured funds were diverted to a good cause. The results of that are there to see for everyone.

I am stating a very obvious fact about why after years punjab hockey infrastructure is not modernised.. but money is there to be spent on election freeebies. Odhisha isn’t much more economically developed than Punjab. I want Punjab to be on the world map for hockey as it’s a state which traditionally makes hockey players.. am  I wrong to want that?

You are not wrong, but Punjab has challenges.

You started a real good thread, and everyone is enjoying it. Let us keep it that way.

Let us all hope India finishes in top 3 and toast to that.

You are right. Every major city in Punjab should have a stadium like that. There should be clubs based on city names where local, non-local and even some international players play and they should try to make a league of it and televise it on local channels.

You need money. They don't have it.

@Khota is right, let us stick to hockey in this thread. We can always talk about politics, shortcoming of various states and other socio-economic/cultural problems in chit chat. Or even that thread in 'Other Sports' about why one state is doing well in hockey and not the other one.

This is a festive occasion, let us spread positivity here. Most of these political topics may be well intentioned but soon spiral to lowering of discourse, ugly spats and bad blood, not many participants here, least we can do is focus more on the event and common areas that we all like....instead of differences and contentious topics.

In a recent interview to media, Belgium hockey player Elliot van Strydonck expressed his disappointment over India hosting the mega event again. Van Strydonck alleged that India has managed to host the mega event for the third time in the last four editions due to the "power of money".

The hockey player was asked: 'How is it possible that a sport agrees to play three of its last four Worlds in the same country?'

"The power of money. Belgians know India and its obligations well. They must be careful with water and food. They have their routine. It is regrettable that India still hosts such an event. But India is the only country that can fill stadiums with 20,000 seats every day. The atmosphere is guaranteed. In addition, it is the only nation that can count on global sponsors like Hero or Odisha. The choice makes sense financially, but unfair to sporting fairness. The Red Lions have won everything in 4 years. However, the media coverage of hockey remains too limited here (in Belgium)," van Strydonck told Belgium newspaper La Libre as quoted by The Indian Express.

Don't understand the comment about food and water. Does he mean hygiene?

Not withstanding the quality of players from Netherlands or Belgium.. hockey is a minority sport limited to private school kids who end up doing well professionally just due to after effects of a grassroots infrastructure in a 1st world country.. no one in these countries even watch or care for Hockey. Talk about sour grapes.. maybe he forgot that the next edition of the World Cup is actually due to be held in Netherlands/Belgium.. where we will see empty stadiums for most matches.
