Opens are tricky, many super GMs avoid them because you can bleed your ELO points there, even a draw against 2600 will set these 2750+ guys a long way back. In supertournaments, unless one has a disaster of a tournament (eg. Ding in Norway) not that tough to maintain rating. Refreshing to see Arjun not shy away, or maybe he doesn't get invited to top events. Many Russian players in the past faced this same problem because most closed tournaments limit to 2 (max 3) players from a particular country.....so relied more on opens where it is tough to gain rating points (despite weaker opponents, counterintuitive I guess). Nakamura already said that he won't play the Olympiad this year. Still Caruana, So, Aronian, Dominguez is a very strong lineup. Russia, China, Uzbekistan other strong contenders.

Nihal should be in this conversation, but his obsession with online chess, blitz and bullet isn't helping him grow. Always playing bullet till late night, hope he course corrects, has been stuck in mid/late 2600s for too long, his ceiling is much higher than that.
