sage Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 A Cup by definition requires knock out matches it would be a World League otherwise Texan 1

The mock tests don’t matter besides preparing you for the main event. Your performance in the main exam is what matters in the end. Or a better analogy would be an exam or anything that involves multiple levels. The last level of a World Cup is a knock out. The only purpose of the earlier levels is to make you reach that last level. If you don’t want this, then don’t call it a World Cup as world cups are always knockouts eventually. It's not comparable to mock tests. Bilaterals are like mock tests where team is trying to prepare for main exam i.e. WC. Purpose of WC is to determine WC champions. Purpose of league matches is to eliminate poor performing teams and then let teams compete to find winner. Here all teams have already competed and one team has clearly defeated all other teams.
Trichromatic Posted November 14, 2023 Author Posted November 14, 2023 Does any sports has such round robin format where a team plays all other teams along with knock outs?

And as we all know our players have a mental block when it comes to knockout for a while now. Just cause you won all the games before the knockouts means nothing. No one will go back and be like ohh India won all their pre Knockout games, best team in WC lmao It's not about winning all the games but defeating all the teams.

Cricket depends on international fixtures unlike other sports, where they depend on domestic leagues. In football, countries hardly face each other that often. Then there are other sports where funding is a problem ,so they can't have a big world cup with so many venues and grounds, cricket is unique in such ways.

Football wc and tennis grand slams are knockout tournaments. In those, you don't get to play against all the opponents and is out of tournament after losing the game. By that logic even Football is not a ‘knock out’ tournament. Coz in the group stages, you can lose and still qualify to the next stage which is a knock out. And what makes you think, there is a knock out stage after qualifiers simply because no team has played every other team in the group stages? Yes, cricket differs coz if we go about having groups in a tournament of 7-8 strong teams, this whole thing will be a joke. So the initial non knock out phase is round robin unlike group qualifiers. But they still wanna retain the knock out phase of other World Cup events like football

The purpose is also to decide the best performing team when your survival is on the line. Performance in knock outs is one indicator of that. They don’t simply have knockouts because it wasn’t possible to play every other team. It is also to decide who played the best under pressure. Edited November 14, 2023 by MK55

Atleast top 2 teams will get some incentive of playing in semi's as they are the ones who played better than the rest. Spot on, I don't understand why IPL style is so wrong or has to be frowned upon.

I agree this format is not suited for WC. Its more League type format. Where each team gets to play against all teams and at the end of the Season Wins, Draws and Losses are tallied and the Winner declared (Football Leagues etc) For World cup there should always be 2-4 Groups. Followed by Knockouts QF, SF and F This tournament deserved a IPL type rewarding system for table topper.

So there was no pressure on NZ or India in league match? NZ already lost an under pressure match v Pakistan.
Trichromatic Posted November 14, 2023 Author Posted November 14, 2023 When was the last time pressure was defining factor in determining WC champions? 2003 WC - Aus had beaten Ind both with and without so called KO pressure. 2007 WC - Aus had beated all teams in all types of scenarios. 2011 WC - Indian team was comfortably better than SL in all types of scenarios. 2015 WC - Last time NZ won an ODI in Aus was in 2009. They win 0 wins in 14 years irrespective of pressure. 2019 WC - NZ handled the pressure, but lost because of absurd rules.

It's like a candidate has already aced 6 rounds of interviews and he will be told that 2 interviewers who had already interviewed, they will interview the candidate again with similar questions, but under some so called extra pressure. What does that prove? It proves that they are the best team in the conditions but does not prove whether they are capable of handling pressure of a knockout game. Most World level sports do not just pick the table topper as the champion even if they beat all other teams. They still need to go through a playoff phase. And just because one team won all matches, you can't just drop playoffs.
Texan Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 In sport (as also in life in many ways), it is not just important to be the best team, it is even more important to be able to play your best when it matters the most. Nash, Vijy and Gambit 3

Totally agree. for some reason kohli failed to perform as a captain when it matters most. rohit is doing good job so far. One more match and he will go as best cricketer in india.

It's not really every other team in this WC either. Some teams got eliminated in the qualifying rounds. We did not play them. All sports have qualification tournaments. Other sports pick more teams in the main event because more teams are competitive, while in cricket, it is mainly 7-8 teams only taht are competitive. So what is your suggestion? Are you suggesting that if any team in such a tournament wins all games, then organizers should cancel all KO games and just declare that team the winner? Surely, you yourself will realize how foolish that would make the tournament and how would you organize a tournament where you don't even know whether KO games are needed or not?
