Rahul starts great on away tours in tough conditions and fails in upcoming matches. He does hard job and when it's time to milk easy runs he throws it away. That's reason his average is below 35.

Yes, he has failed to be consistent on many ocassions. What's wrong? Technically he seems to be top class batsman.

Most probably he looses focus & hunger after hundred. Have seen him go in shell as batsman in later part of series too which takes him no where. If anything he should get confidence and look to dominate bowlers.

While his number of 100+ scores are high, his 50+ scores are on lower side in comparison to other batsmen.

 

Will batting lower down the order help him in fixing this?

If it makes him more aggressive, with test field sets, we'll see more 50s from him I guess. Sometimes he makes it harder for himself by going into a shell

No his avg is that low because he used to open, check the stats of openers in similar series he played. He did do badly in 2018 but if you take those spiked tracks away he's done fairly decently.

Why is our barometer always centuries and individual accolades? Its a bit sickenning. I'd rather have 11 players with 0 centuries but a clutch gene to power through championships.

Rahul is better than what his average suggest but still a huge underachiever. He hasn't justified the hype which was created behind him.

 

If we take all the factors and balance his stats, he is ideally a 37-38 averaging batsman. Not that good enough but still Rahane level.

Yesterday, he was stuck after hitting one beautiful boundary. He could barely rotate strike and got out after 20 balls.
