Under-19 fast bowlers progress

I still remember the match where Netravalkar/Sandeep Sharma running through the sides.   We followed India/Pakistan match ball by ball on ICF. 14 years have rolled by !!! We were enthused about even Unadkat who was the quickest of the lot back then, Good to see this dude making something out of his career. Unadkat is still playing. Sandeep Sharma is still staying relevant. What happened to the players from other batches?     Mavi, Nagarkoti, Ishan Porel.    We have guys Kartik Tyagi, Akash Singh, Sushant Mishra who are still struggling to come out of shadows. Arshdeep Singh who was the backup bowler of the Mavi batch has managed to break into the national side.  Then 2022 batch Hangarkekar is still warming bench for CSK.   Raj Limbani from 2024 batch has shown some promise.  2010 batch bowlers are still staying relevant. But after that apart from Avesh, Khaleel (both 2016 pant batch) and Arshdeep others have somewhat faded.

Here is the under-19 match thread of that match

My guess? Injuries. They affect almost every fast bowler at some point as they develop from U19 to senior pros. How they recover from that - physically and mentally - dictates their entire career.

For sure, Mavi, Nagarkoti and Tyagi fall into the category of being ones whose careers were derailed by injury.

Cummins is a great example of someone who had the opposite experience. He was a stick-figure and oft-injured. But once he crossed that phase, he touched excellence.

I think India has potential to unleash factory of fast bowling. There is some gap in the process. It sure cannot be a coincidence. I am not overly enthused about this fast bowling contract. On the surface it looks good. But it is not an avenue that unearths new potentials. It just focuses on select individuals.

Need to kick out useless selectors and need brave ones that trust young ones .. India is often spoilt for choice and often makes the wrong decisions 9 times out of 10

Do not think U19 wc are pipe-lines to Ind team anymore with IPL producing the most of the bowling talents. If A.Singh is left out donot think there has been any U19 WC bowler who made into Ind intnl since RP Singh.

A.Singh also made it to Ind team because he was at right place at right time- Ind star batters were struggling against LAF which got the attention that Ind need such a bowler in the team, their first pick was Khaleel who was not effective then Mohsin Khan has breakout season where he looked unplayable with pace and bounce but he got injured and then Singh was the only choice Ind was left with.

IPL has been able to unearth better talent than Ind age group system. This U-19 WC team had no spark no one  really to talk about, no leg-spinner, no pacer apart from Lambani (donot think he is that tall or that fast).

Mavi and Nagakoti had all the hype , Ind was looking for bowlers at that time , IPL teams wanted them but then the 2 seasons full of injury and rehab and then Ind found bowlers in Bhumrah, Shami and other who were there found their peak form.

Mavi is 25 and is bowling sub 135 in t20s when he should have been at his prime, Nagarkoti is not even playing for his domestic side was not there in Rajasthan T20 league.

They have to turn-up and play domestic cricket else there are alot of bowlers in the circuit.

Umran and Tyagi  proper 145+ kmph bowlers are finding hard to break into their IPL teams not sure if U19 players will be able to do so, unless v.special talent or has that t20 brains and variations.

Indian Cricket has changed, selectors don't watch domestic cricket and only judge a player based on semi final or final of domestic tournaments, which means a good player with a poor team is less likely to get noticed that a decent player with a good team.

IPL has changed the priorities and any bowler who does well there suddenly becomes the all format potential bowler, irrespective of whether that skillset allows him or not.

Any U19 fast bowler is bound to be raw and may not have all the skillsets which a domestic trundler might have courtesy of his vast experience. Hence an IPL team latches on to the seasoned trundlers while the young Indian fast bowlers are either choosen for the net practice or for carrying the water bottle.

Although the parameters will vary if the u19 fast bowler is a foreigner. Then automatically he will get all the love and support from the IPL mgmt.

Selections has always been like this, selectors would only travel to big centres like Mumbai, Del, Bangalore. And for big games or Irani trophies.

Ind selectors never had an eye for fast bowlers plus there was no injury management so even if some1 was quick they would get injured and then fade away or in most of the cases trade of pace for longevity.

Rest is v.much the case as described, mixing the formats, IPL teams playing seasoned  trundlers rather than building on young talent because of quick returns and investing in any young player is fruitless as there are big auction and they will lose that player.

The fascination to find all format players should stop, there is a need of specialized players now. They may look hack but would work in certain formats.

Having biggest t20 league still Ind does not have T20 style of players because of this fascination, no mystery bowler, no finishers, no proper hitters, bowlers cannot bat and batter cannot bowl.

I have to say Indian selection and management has left a lot to be desired.  Karthik Tyagi, Umran Malik and now Mayank Yadav are consistently overlooked in favor of glorified medium pacers like Siraj, Avesh and Arshdeep. Honestly if Umran and Mayank were consistently in the national setup and being looked after by the best coaching and support staff they would not be getting injured as often as they are (not to mention that India would be terrifying with 150+kmph bowlers in their lineup).

Even now Karthik Tyagi is not injured and he's bowling as fast as he ever has. India have only themselves and their chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar to blame for the current state of Indian fast bowling.

Umran and Mayank have been regularly injured..Umran developed this unfotunate habbit recently..same story with Kartik Tyagi too..its a different matter..the grooming at NCA could be questionable..but regular injuries...do not help anyone..

The non development of Tyagi,Umran,Mavi,Kuldeep Sen,Mayank has seriously destroyed our future plans with pace

We simply have no one left with that X factor element which a top side needs to have and all the top ones had in the past

Had even 2-3 came out well from the above mentioned names that would have served us world of good going forward, the coward management (,captain ,coach in last 4-5 years)from state boards to BCCI and the individual all are to be blamed for this mess
