Bowling Speed Of Curtly Ambrose and Courteny Walsh

Before his injury I think Ian Bishop was faster than both Ambrose and Walsh.

 

When you are 6-7" + in height like Walsh and Ambrose... the speeds become deceptive.

 

BTW in India in 1983 when Marshall, Holding. Daniel were bowling.... Walsh was on the bench or 4th choice.

Anderson picked more than 60% of his wickets at home. Same is 44% for Walsh.

Wayne Daniel, he was very fast but he had to compete with ATG fast bowling attack for a place.

 

Like Sylvester Clarke he also played for county cricket .

 

If these two played now, they would be among best fast bowlers .

I am assuming you saw him in late 90s when he was late to mid 30s. In the early 90s obviously they were no speed guns mostly but he looked quick in some spells. Also the WI bowlers had 3-4 types of short balls. They would make the batsman confident of pulling with tempting short balls and  then unleash a snorter. Even Walsh and Ambrose. Obviously never express or fast.

 

Trundler according to me is subjective . Tushar Deshpande probably bowls the same average speed as Bumrah-Shami in T20 but he is a bonafide Trundler in my book (as of now) because he has no other skills or skills needed for that next level.

Yes Wayne Daniel was special. He got sidelined for most because of Roberts, Holding, Croft, Garner and Marshall.

People who saw him play for Middlesex absolutely loved him.

I especially remember Wayne Daniel in the 1976 series WI/Eng before Croft and Garner appeared.

 

Then I remember him in 1983 in the great Ahmedabad test where Kapil took 9 wickets in WI second inning. WI had Marshall, Holding, Daniel, Davis.

ambrose at his best was around 140-145 kph guy. Walsh a little bit slower, more in the McGrath range of 135-140ph guy.

Distinctly remember 33 year old McGrath clicking upto 143 kph in the 2003 World Cup . He only lost pace after that 

 

33 year old Ambrose (1996) wasnt as quick. 

Everyone clocked 5-7kph higher in the 2003 world cup due to altitude. its the same reason why the world's longest long jump record is from the freaking 60s and set where average altitude is like 5000 feet. 

That being said, McGrath was clocking 140kph+ in the infamous 'Lara series' in west indies in 1999.

A lot has been said about the bowling speeds in the 2003 World Cup. It’s probably more to do with the altitude than speed gun tuning.

I don’t find the speeds of Lee Akhtar abnormal in that tournament. Lee always had some series where he could bowl around 155k at will. Even in that NZ series a couple of years later he probably bowled an entire over at 156-160k AND he looked visibly quicker. I haven’t seen anyone look as quick so many times. Lee even bowled some super fast spells in tests in SA

Akhtar was another one. Always exciting to watch these two bowl purely for their pace. Good Batsmen had to react differently when they faced these two. Bond was slower probably 153k max potential which also lines up with his 2003 World Cup speeds.

Tait bowled quick some spells but he always looked ordinary besides a couple of spells in Australia. 
Johnson on the other hand was slightly slower but always made it awkward for the batsmen. However even Johnson bowled 150k ish in SA in 2009 I think. He retired hurt a few batsmen in that opening spell. And then off course there was the Ashes.

Without being biased, tbh, its not easy to tell the pace just lookng at videos. Aussie pitches are bouncy, and they look quick. Even mohanty used to look quicker in england. And when players say about someones speed, its more like metaphorical. Doesnt mean he never faced someone quicker.

Watched 100's of such videos and read ample statements...
