Any hopes of us beating Belgium?

I haven't been following the hockey since the first game - but have our folks improved? Looking at the PC stats looks ominous though. Too many conceded and not enough conversion.

Huge underdogs.

Realistically a defeat by 2 or 3 goals margin based on how Belgium has picked up pace.

Hope our boys surprise.

Who do you think we will meet on the other side in the QFs? Spain looks like they are having a rough time and even Germany don't seem to be so hot.

Germans beat Dutch yesterday. That group has gone crazy, upsets galore.

Knowing our luck with draws (@neel roy will tell you more) we'll meet Dutch in QF.

Realistically Dutch will finish second in that group. We'll finish 3rd here. So QF against Dutch. If we win that, SF against Belgium. Draw from hell.

We have to win one of our remaining 2 games, preferably against Aussies which will set us up for QF against GBR. SF against Germany (last few years we have done well against them). But again, even more crazy stuff can happen in other games.

People don't keep accurate records of hockey. No statsguru.

Our record against Aus is really bad. Against Eng we are comfortably ahead.

Really?

Yea vs aus ita 94

Vs 25 lmfaooo

What carnage.

Wrong stats, made up numbers, dodgy site.

Late hockey historian BG Joshi had the correct numbers. Only statistician who can be trusted. His blog/website has disappeared since his death.

We were comfortably ahead of England last time I checked (pandemic time). Worst record against Aus, then Ger, then Dutch, then Pak. Against all others we have above 1 W/L.

Against Germany it's mediocre too yes. But against nedtherlands pretty decent.

Also vs oakistan it is coming very close now. 15 games away or something.

Record from late 60s I think.

But yeah we have worst numbers against them.

Really hope we make it respectable vs aus. Lol I don't want to go in to work otherwise lol.

Cause few of my colleagues follow olympics and watch hockey.

Weirdly people in Australia love Sachin too much. Virat too but Sachin is the most popular.

Bumrah for bowlers is popular. Ah and they love pant lol. They say he plays like an Aussie. Has that aussie grit.

Only stat that matters is number of Olympic golds/medals, then number of WCs. Aussies won't equal us in next 100 years.

Belgians clown away outside big events. Bur regarded as best, Aussies have best W/L in last 10 years but lost when it mattered. Only low IQ Pakistanis worry about H2H.

Hmm.. they have already exceeded my initial expectations by qualifying from the group. Hope they keep surprising me pleasantly. Too much to hope for this Olympics though. Feel like we have vastly underperformed. The team archery events and the shooting events have been massive shocks. Not that I was expecting golds galore, but was hoping at least the men's team would get to the semis easily and strive for more and that the women's team wouldn't be so pathetic. Was hoping for one gold from shooting though and more finalists. Our shooters have massively let us down.

That Korean shot to get Manu to third place was another blow. Thought she would win silver at minimum.

Moreover, the draws for Nikhat and Lovlina have also been sobering. Amit was another disappointment so far. With his seeding and first opponent - thought we had a medal for sure there.

China winning gold 100 mtr freestyle swimming.

What a big achievement for China. They sure are making a statement to the world and the US.

Interesting reactions on this from Americans.

Most saying it is a clear case of drug cheating by China as they are notorious for it. Commenting that nobody beats the no. 2 by a margin of well over 1 seconds in 100 mtr freestyle and nobody smashed WR by .4 like that in a slow pool.

Don't think we have much chance, ever since they used astro turf and quickened up hockey we have struggled, even though we are the best funded out of all these teams.

In Tokyo our teams looked like they had bridged the gap substantially. They have regressed since then though. Fitness wise there was 0 difference tbh. Not sure why the downgrade happened since then.

They respect people who do well against them. For a long time Sachin was one of only players who always performed against them. They have similar respect fr Laxman. Pant for the same reason.

Priyanka Goswami 20 km race walker, her personal best is better than Tokyo's gold.

But conditions matter a lot as her personal best was in Feb in India and Tokyo was humid like hell in August.

Will be happy with a top 10 finish.

These are the kind of 6-8 outside  chances that one hopes 1 of them converts.... For ex. the 6'4" 150kg Asian record holder shot putter tejinder toor recently said he's gaining fitness n targeting 22m for Olympics. 22m is a sureshot medal n probable gold.

I think it was due to covid, those teams couldn't prepare properly.

Men's 20km Race Walk Final has been delayed by half an hour due to bad weather. It will begin at 11:30 AM now.

Akshdeep, Vikash and Paramjeet Singh are the Indian athletes participating in this race.
