Spain isn't that successful in Olympics like other developed nations but they have legacy in football, tennis. Similar with Argentina. Mexico is weak in Olympics but look at their combat sports legacy. RSA great in cricket and most successful in rugby. Olympics is no doubt important but not everything, especially when there are allegations of corruption, biased officials, doping, developed countries pushing for more medals in their areas of strengths etc. 

 

I have full respect for the hockey gold medalists. This maybe a cricket forum but they are much better and under appreciated than 1983 and 2011 world cup squads. even fatman and lolhi (who got a world cup finally) get more recognition than our gold medalists. My dad always preferred hockey over cricket. He aprreciated the fast pace of hockey. there never is a dull moment like in cricket. He used to say cricket is for the unathletic pudgy people. Gavaskar and Sahstri have made that impression on him

India should look at PIOS /OCIs lateral entry, but those nerds are worse than the natives. But it is a moot point that GoI ruled against it anyway

synchronized swimming takes the cake. if india had actual power, kabaddi and khokho will be on olympics. they are much better and Indians are much more suited for playing it. At least, the goras won't be winning it. In hockey, they had to shift from field hockey to turf to shift it in their favor. Why do they call it field hockey in that case. They should call it turf hockey.

Throw-ball cricket using tennis ball. Such tournaments are held in South India esp, small school ground and some have even flood-lights as well. Very popular galli cricket format

For me Sync diving takes the cake. At least Sync swimming looks good. Diving is just two people diving at the same time.

If not for WW-2, Dhyan Chand would have won 5 Olympic golds in a team sport. That record would have stood till the end of time. 

 

Our own people talk about Bradman, Jesse Owens but don't know who Dhyan Chand was. Even our highest sporting award was named after Rajiv Gandhi till Modi changed it to Major Dhyan Chand award, happened recently.
