Prabhdeep Singh Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 It seems umpires call benefit everyone but India Gollum 1
sensible-indian Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Umpires call is a scam. Was and will always be. My stance ever since it was introduced. I get the technical explanations but human beings are flawed and will get influenced by many factors whether they accept it or not. A dismissal is either out or notout. Shouldn't be based on umpire's mood. Lord and Gollum 2

Do away with umpire's call and let the 3rd ump decide whether it's Out or Not based on the evidence irrespective of on-field call. Currently if the umpire's biased against you and gives marginal decisions against you, you're unlikely to win. BCCI and Indian team will always have a target on their back and the umpire's call will go against them nearly every time. Can't play the opponents and the umpires everytime. Gollum 1

My solution to part of this umpire's call BS was to go back to pre WW2 era rule of ball needing to pitch on the stumps' line for both righties & lefties! Otherwise most tests will end in 1-2 days if you do away with umpire's call now, as everything will be out

Otherwise most tests will end in 1-2 days if you do away with umpire's call now, as everything will be out A very simple solution is that no matter what the umpire's decision is, ignore it when it's referred to the 3rd ump. If more than 15% (or say 20%) or the ball is hitting the stumps, give it Out else Not Out. That way the same event has the same outcome without the bullshyte "Umpire's Call". We have to make referrals more deterministic and equal for everyone. In knockouts and finals nearly every umpire's call has gone against us and it's one of the reasons for our failures in knockouts. It's such a simple solution and I don't understand why they're not adopting it. It should be either Out or Not Out irrespective of the umpire's call. sensible-indian, Texan and Gollum 1 2
R!TTER Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Ok but it's not realistic unless we also change that ball pitching in line rule, because most matches will be over too quickly if we go with the current set of rules.

The adjust the tolerance to 50% of the ball hitting the stumps instead of 15-20%. I would rather take a shorter but fairer game over a game which is biased and dependent on external factors such as "umpire's call".

Give more benefit of the doubt to the batsman (say if only 10% of the ball is hitting the stumps, give it not out) and give everything hitting stumps more than that preset percentage as out. It should be BLACK and WHITE. Umpires call was a good start, but cannot be kept forever. It needs to be replaced by clear and fair binary results. Look how tennis has evolved: they no longer even have linespersons making line calls. It is all driven by technology and it is one way or the other, no ambiguity. Tennis actually used this technology after they saw how it was used in cricket. While tennis has taken it to the next level, here we are still stuck with umpire's call. As long as humans are involved, there'll be bias. It may not be conscious bias but unconscious bias, which is a known thing, i.e. humans allow bias to sway decision making without even being aware of it. It happens all the time, and umpires are human. Literally every knockout game has had umpire call go against us - can't be a coincidence. Whether it's incompetence, conscious bias, unconscious bias, cheating or whatever it is, the better option is to make the game equal and fair. People don't come to watch umpires but to see a fair match. I would rather watch a fair match than one impacted because of an umpire's call. We've the technology, use it. India and BCCI is hated by literally everyone and this shows in umpiring calls. Look at hockey and see the bias there - literally every match against goras we've to overcome opponents and the umpires. At least in Cricket we've the say to make a difference. Gollum Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 BCCI might lol. Richest board, boardroom bullies, 90% wealth generator yada yada, kya fayda? Hockey team gets shafted even more, but those poor folks can't take on collective might of goras in FIH. What excuse in cricket? Ultimate_Game 1
jf1gp_1 Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 Another thread another lame excuse. Whats wrong with accepting NZ were a better side and beat us.

CoverDrive Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 (edited) Most people do not seem to understand umpires call. It is in place to limit influence of the DRS technician on decision outcomes. He decides the video frames to be selected in case of impact to pad which can be a grey area due to limitations of technology. in case if these 50:50 decisions a smart operator will know which decision he will get based on what he selects. So current system defers to umpire in such cases who has more factors to make a decision since he has a better view of the action than the camera from his view and also knows how the ball is bouncing and other such factors as he is following the game up close. this system has been working and of course we don’t like that when it goes against us. The system is based on principle that technology will eliminate obvious errors but it has limitations so in such scenarios we will give more weightage to umpire on the field. if they start going completely by the technology there is going to be lot more anger when home broadcasters will push more decisions to their advantage Edited October 27, 2024 by CoverDrive
