Sgattick10 Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 The only problem with Bumrah as long term test captain is his availability in all test matches which is impossible. He is our premium test fast bowler and we need to play him judiciously, not in every aira gaira tests. I'd prefer Pant as captain Ultimate_Game 1

Hasn't done anything worthy of being the test captain. As for Kohli getting dropped - I hope this is his last series if he fails to perform. But maybe its just wishful thinking... Not like we have any good replacements yet as well. He does bring some "intensity" in the team mindset for sure and can act as a mentor for the young ones. Idk if Rohit is good enough in Tests for that. Should never have been considered for test captaincy. Rohit is a poor test captain that I agree but he has been our 2nd best test batsman after Pant in the last 5 years(Jaiswal doesn't count). Also has done very well in the last 2 ICC tournaments, playing many impactful knocks. Kohli, who plays at a much safer No4, has done much worse than Rohit since 2020 in test cricket. He can still play ODIs which was his best format but needs to retire from Test ASAP.
R!TTER Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 (edited) RGS was worse in the NZ series; he threw his wicket away probably 5/6 times & almost all of them to pace He was also dropping multiple catches per inning; he definitely dropped half a dozen by the end. And if he repeats one or both of those things here, it will affect his captaincy and our chances of winning! Edited November 22, 2024 by R!TTER

We saw how he was batting in SL in ODIs after Rohit gave a great start every match. Even in WT20 he was a walking wkt and had to play a crawling innings to finally score some runs. Don't want him to be in the Ct squad and doom us in another tourney. We've enough talent for shorter formats. No need for this has been to stink it up. AuxiliA and Lord 2

jf1gp_1 Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 He should not. In fact Kohli will have to play a big role till Rohit is back and ensure Bumrah doesn't over bowl himself
ungboysj Posted November 23, 2024 Author Posted November 23, 2024 Will Rohit resign if we win this match Where will Rohit bat can't break the opening pair He should come at 5 Yj Rahul Gill Kohli Rohit Pant Reddy Sundar/jadeja Rana Bumrah Siraj/akashdeep
lemsip Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Bumrah's captaincy skills will be tested in the chase. At the only other time he has captained, he let England chase down 378 for the loss of only 3 wickets in one day. This too with an attack including himself, shami and Siraj. Even today some of his field placings were bizarre and defensive when Starc and Hazlewood were batting. He is a legendary bowler but whether he has captaincy chops to maximise the use of team resources to take out wickets has still to be established.

That 378 chase was just England in Bazball form on a flattened track

His lack of decision making skill was very exposed then. He should have learnt since then but in that match he was a hopeless captain in the field. His performance in this game as a bowler has been awe inspiring but not sure I have seen enough of his decision making on the field to suggest he is definitely better than Rohit as a leader. There were some defensive passages this morning when Starc was batting that rivalled peak Rohit.

Body language is terrible compared to Bumrah. Bumrah was also calm when players made a mistake like Kohli drop whereas Rohit shouts at them openly. He's still learning tactically but has enough to be full time captain atleast ahead of Rohit.

Agree about the calmness and body language but the question of full time captaincy is academic. He is not going to be able to play all games anyway due to his workload and fitness management and India need him more as a bowler than as a captain. The only other certain pick in the team and candidate with enough experience is Pant who is too much of a free spirit to constrain with captaincy The options are probably pretty limited beyong Bumrah, Pant and potentially Gill or Jaiswal in 2-3 years depending on how their careers develop.

Yeah Pant is the most realistic option.
putrevus Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 (edited) Rohit Sharma was never good enough to become test captain. He got exposed many times but in Indian conditions team was so much better than visiting team his captaincy never got exposed. Rohit gets too cocky for his own good.
