Its a myth he wasn't given enough chances or supported. He simply failed at the top level after a great start. Anyone would be dropped with his performance, some even before him.

 

He did well in first 10 tests. Averaged 105, 227, 83 and 48. Even in that last series he played 3 innings, scored 82 and 57 and got run out in one inning.

 

After that played 1 test in NZ, failed there, but it was just 1 match series.

 

Failed in 3 tests v WI and got dropped.

 

Failed in 3 tests v NZ at home, but that series had only first match as completed test which was a low scoring game. Batted just 2 innings in 3 test match series. Scored 27 in the game where he was 3rd highest scorer, didn't get to bat in 2nd inn. Didn't get chance to bat in 2nd test, scored 28 in 60 balls in only inning in 3rd test in which no batsman crossed 50.

 

So basically failure v WI in series was only reason to get him dropped.

 

There are many batsmen who have got more chances than that.

Azharuddin had weakness against short pitch bowling too.But he got so many chances.Kambli should have played lot more tests than he ended up playing.

 

As you said in the NZ series no one scored any runs. 

 

He got blamed for more for his so called behaviour outside the cricket.BCCI was run by morons then who wanted cricketers to be choir boys.

 

It is still run by idiots of another kind these days too.

Laxman averaged 27 for first 20 tests as specialist batsman in first 4-5 years.

 

Jadeja was selected for 7 series with consistent failures.

Laxman failed as he was forced to play out of position as an opener. Then Laxman put his foot down and said he should only be considered as a middle order batter and won't play as an opener, and things changed. He never looked poor in the middle order.

yeah, VVS was not meant to be an opener. He played at No. 3 (sometimes at No. 4) throughout Ranjis

The greatest-ever test knock came from him batting at #3.

 

IIRC, RSD was struggling a bit at 3, so they decided to send VVSL at 3 in the follow-on. Rest is folklore!!

I heard they sent him at 3 coz he was already set. He had scored a 50+ in the 1st innings and was the last batter dismissed. So in a way he could continue his innings from where he left off in the 1st innings with his eye already in.
