Likes of Satish Dhawan, Vikram Sarabhai were from North/West, pioneers, legends. Bengal too with great legacy in science/research.

 

Even in today's ISRO, people from all regions are well represented.

Would have been nice to see Ashwin lead us in a few tests. But his being South Indian had no part in being overlooked for captaincy.

 

Indian bowlers have historically been looked at as lower castes in Indian cricket. That is why we don't have the culture of appointing bowling captains, even in IPL and domestic. Blame our chwtiya fans as well, like we are seeing even now, zombies cheering for washed up Kohli/Rohit when we have a generational colossus in Bumrah at the peak of his powers. This extends to even team selection where horses for courses is applicable only to bowlers, while batsmen are allowed to have tailender like stats for 5 years straight. Or in case of Rohit, even having a career, do people forget how awful he was in white ball till 2013 and in tests till 5 years back? 

 

Also getting captaincy role in Indian cricket involves lots of politics, maneuvring, PR games, building network/contacts with BCCI people etc. Otherwise in which universe did Dhoni and Rohit deserve test captaincy? That is why bhola bhala Southies like Dravid, Kumble, VVS were below in pecking order, heck even Sachin was overlooked easily despite the bad luck around his captaincy stint. Ganguly was a smart politician and also a truly inspirational leader so an exception, Sehwag was another simpleton who got overlooked despite being 10x the player MSD was, nothing to do with regionalism. A crook like Azharuddin led us in 3 WCs, a record that will permanently stand in Indian cricket...he was a Hyderabadi (though doubt old city people identity as Southies). Venkatraghavan led us in 1975 and 1979 WCs....a mediocre cricketer albeit a sharp cricketing mind and more of an AR and good fielder for those days' standards. Dravid could have been a long term option but 2007 WC humiliation was unpardonable. Kumble got it too late when he was almost done as an international class player..... our biggest matchwinner those days but because of being a bowler, he got it after Ganguly/Dravid. 

 

Doubt Ashwin has any PR game, or asslicking qualities, political mind etc. Too blunt and headstrong, thin-skinned, and famous for even having a fallout with Srinivasan/CSK a few years back when he chose Chemplast over India Cements. Guy was never going to be captain, and always a soft target. He doesn't even have any political connections like Jadeja whose wife is a BJP MLA from Jamnagar......forget MSD/Ko/Ro level connections. Even if he were Punjabi or Marathi, would have been treated just the same.

Yes but we are better looking too. So what can one do, they have to choose us for representation. South Indians just won the genetic lottery

He's our version of Azam Khan. Sad part is that he's a captain and I don't know how we can enforce fitness tests and standards when we have an unfit and fat player as a captain. How can anyone be deemed unfit when fatso Rohit is leading the team?
