Drunken rowdies in Bengaluru would roam the streets chanting "KaamaNNa MakkaLu! KaLLa SuLLa MakkaLu!" (boys of love, boys of theft and lies), extorting money from homes and passers-by by threatening to drench them with gulaal. And in those days, who know what the hell they used for making gulaal.

My everlasting memory of Holi habba.

Happy Holi y'al!!

Kaamanna is Kaam devta. "KaamaNNa MakkaLu! KaLLa SooLe MakkaLu!"  Children of Kaamdevata - are children of  thieving prostitutes . Eact translation.

For the uniniated - When Kaam devta disturbed Shiva's penance with a moh of kaam and Rati and fired a pushpa baaN on Shiva, Shiva was distracted, then he realized what Kaam devta did and got so angry, he  opened his third eye and burnt Kaam devta. That is the significance of Holi in the south/Karnataka. It used to be called, Kaamannana Habba. We burn a pile of old stuff and dance around it .

They wouldn't say "SooLe" in public to everyone; hence simplified to SooLe :-)

Holika dahan for North India is a different custom. It is from the story of Prahallad being burnt by Holika , was protected by Vishnu.

Who cares about all this. Bollywood thinks this a party to do anything.. Sab chalta hain jee !!

Sorry to say, but I have seen holi celebrations wane in hyderabad as population aged. Especially in UMC and rich areas, there ain't any vibe at all.

Interestingly this ain't the case with Deepavali .

I agree. Back in the day the celebrations used to be wild. Anyone and everyone was fair game. The situation was such that  if you step out of the house, you give implicit consent to get drenched in color. Now strangers are rarely targeted. I did see a couple of youth on a bike throwing some colour at a girl walking along with a male companion yesterday. But such incidents are very few compared to previous times, which is a welcome sign. Also, the colours are easy to wash off now and you won't carry a red face for 7-10 days. Gulaal, chuner etc are no longer used now, another welcome sign.
