Shreyas Iyer is set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I captain, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set for his maiden call-up, as the national selectors look ahead to the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and the next T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand the same year.

 

The T20I squad will be announced on Saturday for the upcoming tour of Ireland and England, India's first T20I assignment since Suryakumar led them to the T20 World Cup tile in March.

 

Suryakumar, 35, is likely to be dropped from the squad altogether. The debate around his position arose following a lukewarm 2026 T20 World Cup, where he scored 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72, and a poor IPL 2026 where he recorded only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

So happy that it has finally happened! Iyer the captain and Sooryavanshi in the T20 team!

 

All we need to do is change captaincy and the team in similar fashion in ODIS and we'll be all set!

What is the batting order then and where will Iyer bat? Is this how it will pan out with Tilak at no.6 or no place for Tilak?

Since WC/Olympics is in 2028 and planning will only begin post 2027, I would like Tilak and Abhi to bowl more.

 

If these together can become the 6th bowler, then absolutely explosive batting.

Yep, people are celebrating but this Iyer move based on online hype is just going to destroy the team.  He has no place in the team if Vaibhav is playing

This is just Mumbai lobby at work. No logic whatsoever, first let Iyer prove he deserves a place in the XI. Other regular members aren't going to be on board with the decision, and I completely back them.

Mumbai lobby does usual shady things. Yuvraj, Bhajji promote only Punjabi players and undermine even Ishan, Chuskis lobby for Rutu, Gill can't let go off his GT bias. 

 

GG has his faults and also favorites, but doesn't do this regionalism chudaap.

Good thing is 2+ years left, maybe 60-70 T20Is. Lot will change, 

 

I am confident we will nail our XI and captain by the time LA arrives.

One thing I have noticed is when they lay pitches in these new venues (like last Asian Games or 24 T20 WC in USA), batting is bloody tough and irrespective of ground dimensions, even minnow teams do a good job in keeping batsmen in check. 

 

28 LA will be similar. And Aus T20 pitches will be like 22 edition. Far cry from IPL and this year's WC pitches. Hope we mentally prepare ourselves that lower scoring affairs honge 2028 ke donon main events mein.

SKY could have retired on a high, as WC winning captain. Missed opportunity because everyone knew the writing was on the wall. He is struggling even in the local league. He is at that age where hand-eye has completely deserted him and anyway a guy like him isn't Sachin that he can make up for that setback with technique.
