Why is Dhruv Jurel playing as a pure batsman in our test team?

Understand the data Gemini is pulling from.

It has a decent sample size for Pant, Kishan, Samson, KL...but not for Jurel.

Anyway, dont want to beat around the bush. I think Jurel can come around as a top tier Test batsman. He isnt a mentally midget and when we can give so many chances for mediocre batters like Rahane & KL, why dont to Jurel who seems to have more potential.

Just because he is a very good keeper is his additional skill, shouldn't be held against him.

Rahane had better start overseas than lot of guys.Let him open the innings like KL .

To deserve more chances you need to perform. Jurel has avg of 13 as batsman.

They kicked out Sarfraz based on couple of failures. After he did much more.He is better batsman than Jurel.

No one is holding his additional skill against him.His batting is not good enough, it has got nothing to do with his WK.

We saw his keeping in England, it was nothing to ride home about.

If you actually watched that game you will see pitch had flattened out by then coz there was no wear and tear on the surface... Coz of that loss and failure of Indian spinners to outbowl Kiwis, they resorted to Rank turners where Sarfaraz failed...

After that India A went to Australia and Sarfaraz was brutally exposed on those spicy decks... While Jurel scored runs and was the only one in fact... Broke the door down and played the Perth test.  His only 1 inns appearance in Australia as seniors returned and he was back on the bench..

Sarfaraz never made it out after that.  Jurel once again heavily scored for India A in England and outscored Sarfaraz once again.

Then his clutch cameo in Oval test.

Best batter along with Sai Su in Recent India A tour of SL as well.

So he is there on merit unlike Sarfaraz who had a middling domestic season where every tom dick and Harry made merry on trash low bounce Ranji surfaces :phehe:

Dude, you are hanging on to a 30 run innings??? Seriously? The real clutch innings in that game came from Washington Sundar and most people will agree that Sundar should not play purely as a batsman either.

And on that Aus tour, same argument about ball getting old and losing seam movement can be made which benefited Jurel batting at number 6. He got few runs after ball had lost its shine and even Tanush Kotian, who is an average allrounder and Prasidh Krishna who is a genuine number 11 were able to score runs.

And the Aus tour you are referring to: Sarfaraz didn't even play that one. I think the bias against Sarfaraz is very obvious from you here. First, you called him "unfit" when you clearly haven't seen how much fitness improvements he has made recently and you are attributing some fake failures to him when he didn't even play that series where you say he struggled.

Again you clearly didn't see the India A games in Australia... India used to lose top order wickets very early and there was lot of seam movement.

ICF had literally threads on those games and everyone was extremely impressed with what they saw from young Jurel.

Similarly Jurel outscored Sarfaraz when India A played in England.

Then as I have said he has done even better in Subcontinent for India A.

He scored a 150 and a 50 odd in Galle last month for India A.

Had Sarfaraz done better in domestic cricket and even a trash low quality tournament that we saw last year in Ranji Trophy he would have made a case... But he didn't.

Yash Rathod, Doseja and young Shaik Rasheed who was impressive in his first ever India A stint last month in SL had more of a case than Sarfaraz.

He is purely here based on PR and nothing else.  Idk when will selectors stop with these social media selections.  Kamboj was already a big example

Fake stats he averages 38 odd at test level... Kuch bhi matlab

FC average is I guess around 55 ish which has jumped from 40ish when he was selected for India.  Has mostly played for India A and never  statpadded on trashy Ranji surfaces where mediocre players boost FC stats.

Well, I think you might have not seen those India A games vs Aus A as you were suggesting that Sarfaraz got found out in that tour when he didn't even play in those matches :wp15:

And what social media pick are you talking about? That guy scored a mountain of runs in domestics over 3-4 seasons, a ton more than any other batter during those seasons - something that hasn't been seen in many years. Probably only Laxman in the mid 90s got something of that magnitude and then Laxman got a good run in the Indian team.

If you want to pick a social media pick, then Jurel might actually qualify. At the time he was picked, he had only scored one hundred in FC cricket when many other keepers had contributed more consistently. Look at Vidarbha's Wadkar who had an average close to 50 at that time and got his team to Ranji finals few times.

No problem in Jurel being a backup keeper. Seems very good in that capacity. As a batsman alone, he doesn't deserve a spot.

And that average of 13 as a specialist batsman is real. When he is not the designated keeper, 13 is his average after 5 Tests, that too after his 50 in first innings.

After pradosh and sarfraz nobody scored in that match except taker. Jurel has failed in both tests outside india. Reddy looked way better than him in Australia.

As opposed to Ranji Trophy where you have 70 batters averaging 50+ in each season and the average pace bowling speed is not more than 126 kmph?

Jurelnmade 249.againdt Nagaland lol.if you take that out his fc average drops to 50.from 55.

Reddy played in MCG too and ... Jurel played just 1 inns in Australia.. looked good but a late cut gone wrong.

Never had the opportunity to bat when pitch had gone flat in Perth in third inns.

This was his lone inns in Australia.

Outta nowhere played Oval test wasn't bad at all.  Kept very well too

Still good enough the amount of minnow bashing Sarfaraz has done and others as well the stats would fall off a cliff too.

Ranji stats should never be taken seriously

Lowest quality FC tournament in the world.

Bhogle and Roshan were talking yesterday how having so many FC sides severely diminishes FC standards.

Recent times sai sudarshan played better than anyone India A games. Padikkal plays only because of his absence. Jurel would have played ahead of padikkal.  There are much better batsmen in domestic than him. He failed both in Australia and England. Just played against u19 level bowlers in India A matches.

That still happened in India. Doesn't tell you anything.  This was Jurel's last match in SA as part A tour.

This is much before his Debut I think when he was picked based on promise.  That useless Bharat is playing.

Jurel made his mark when Lions toured India and he was the keeper bat and he impressed Agarkar along with Akashdeep.

Was initially viewed as keeper bat before he started to get big runs along the way.

So far all his runs are in India. That is the point. When the ball is rising outside the off stump he sorta fends and spoons catch behind the wicket. Reddy looked better than him in Australia that too on Reddy's debut series.

Jurel has better technical game than Reddy especially on backfoot.

He probably would have done even better if he played more in Australia.

Just 1 inns cannot be a metric where India got shot for 150 and he didn't face a single ball from spinner unlike Reddy.

He looked untroubled in his stay if you watched ball by ball

He got out exactly like that in England.
