Dear Deepesh Devendran (and other fast bowlers),

 

I read this article.   It is indeed wonderful to see a new crop of fast bowlers trying to hit 145+ consistently and effectively. If you can do that consistently, accurately and with movement, you can get in the queue! And the queue looks like this:

 

1. Slog for at least 8 years in domestics after you first appear on the radar.

2. Somehow, continue to bowl at this pace for 8 years in the most taxing domestic conditions and hope your body holds up. 

3. Never expect to replace an experienced seamer, unless he himself wants to sit out.

4. Perform in the IPL even if you want to be a red-ball star.

5. Do all of this, and you may be taken in the XV on a 2-match test tour, where you can serve the nation by serving drinks to the buzurgs.

6. And then, you may get into the XI when a buzurg wants to sit out on a dead 1500-run road pitch. Just hope that enough batters make mistakes facing you so you get a few wickets. Otherwise, GOTO Step 1 above.

 

In the meantime, keep that faith! It will all work out.

Batting depth is needed. Otoh 5 bowling options are enough

 

Traditionally only our spinners are able to 8-9. In SENA we have to play subpar pacers just because they can bat. So yeah its the shortest route to jump the queue

Actually he can slog decently.  Fielding i have not seen much. But he is athletic.

He is a bouncer bowler  from what i observed and what i he says in interview  "My plan is to bowl hard length and bouncers"

OP is not about Deepesh Devendran specifically. It's about Siraj who debuted 2 yrs too late. Brar now. And there are scores of other examples.

Deepesh is quite tall.  Looks about 12 to 15 inches  taller than the girl.

If our batters could bowl then we could have avoided the bits and pieces players at 7 and 8. Sometimes at 6 too.

 

And, while it's good if the bowlers can bat, it should not be an impediment to choose them at 9, 10, 11 if they are the best bowlers.

 

So, encourage the bowlers to learn batting but don't choose a bits snd pieces player ahead of a top wicket taker.

Yes I am saying the same thing. Bowling is more important but if two bowlers are of similar good quality batting will come in handy. Even Cummins/Starc level batting is enough

Steyn has made 76 runs even though he could have been a rank tailender all his life.

But even to find out if they are similar good quality, they must be given a chance to play in place of more experienced, but average, bowlers.

On one hand, India is absolutely blessed with the crop of fast bowlers. So much of untapped potential which was often ignored in 70s to 90s era (which lead to the mentality that Indians cant bowl fast), is now getting harnessed and hence we are seeing a rise.

 

On the other hand (sadly) is our commentary box is usually dominated by ex-cricketers who happen to be batters and they have zero interest in talking about fast bowlers, rather they are pretty satisfied by doing the cheerleading for established batters.

 

I recall the interview of DK with Nas & Atherton on cricbuzz...where discussion was about the multi skilled players, and not once DK advocated that batters should learn to bowl, he kept chirping about how bowlers should learn to bat so that batters can get the extra cushion. This was both sad and dangerous in my opinion.

If we consider the young pacers Mayank,Tyagi, Gurnoor, Ashok they have not gone through all this .They all were identified played A matches ,some even made T20 debuts .

 

If we consider the young pacers all have fitness problem and are happy playing only in IPL and skipping domestic tournament.

 

Gurnoor inspite of not playing much, not playing in IPL was directly selected for test squad sidelining a player who has consistently taking wickets in Ranji season.

The new fast bowlers should not play victim card ,but should play more Ranji matches,hone their skills, improve their fitness, improve fielding and should not be content with high paying IPL stint.

Our current problem is the other way round.

 

Most of our U25 140 k+ pacers don't get to play domestic cricket even.

Most of our current pacers are playing directly from IPL without turning for their Ranji sides.

 

Tyagi, Ashok, Gurnoor, Mayank have hardly played any Ranji matches.

 

Tyagi, Mayank, Ashok have high chances to play for team India if they are injury free and even if they ignore Ranji trophy.They may play SMA ,VH trophy and still play for team India.
