"The toll will rise, we are receiving news of more serious injuries," a police officer said in the main control room in the state capital Jaipur. One witness, who gave his name as Santa, said the stampede occurred as authorities tried to stop pilgrims from entering the temple to make way for a VIP. But police gave a different account. "The stampede started after a barricade near the temple broke and there was huge confusion and people started running down a steep slope and fell on each other," Rajiv Dasoth, a senior police officer said. Local television showed volunteers carrying bodies and trying to revive them on the street. One child cried over her father's lifeless body, wailing "Daddy, please get up". Bodies were piled high in a local hospital, with the injured writhing in pain as medical staff rushed to help, a photographer said. "We will definitely conduct an inquiry and if we find people were negligent, we will definitely take action," Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria told reporters. Earlier, TV reports said that rumours of a bomb in Mehrangarh near Jodhpur area led to the stampede. More than 30 bodies were brought to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and at least 10 to Mathura Das Hospital here, Divisional Commissioner Kiran Soni Gupta said. There was a big disaster in South India once, and I have read other reports in North sometime. Who needs terrorists when such ill organized events can cause these? :(( 113!!!

How many more dead bodies do they want to see, before they decide to do something about crowd management? I DONT GET THIS, WHY IS THERE SO LITTLE RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE AND PROPERTY IN INDIA? :mad:

I still remember people moving dead bodies in rickshaws. I was 5-6 yrd old then but I still cant forget what I saw. Its a shame that govt doesnt do the needful ...

A hundred and seventy nine human beings lost their lives in this incident. Sincere condolences to the families of all the victims. On a related note, I notice several people placing blame on the government for this. Can you elaborate? And what would you suggest be done about dealing with things like this?

Better facilities at these places. Most of these events are known well before hand,but just a few policewallahs with lathis are alloted. There is no control on the number of people. Most of the temples are not geared to take such a large increase in polpulation. This particular temple is a 15th century temple. But most likely.....nothing has been done to accomodate the large number of people that visit these days. Human life is indeed very cheap here.:((
coffee_rules Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Plus, India doesn't have a 'volunteer' culture. A public function like this one can't be controlled by policemen alone. There must be enough 'volunteers'. Why can't 'chaddi' people do that, as they are the flag bearers of Hindu culture, anyway.
