Is world cup important now??

Lets just pull out of it. Bastards. They keep finding ways to earn money. [/rant] [sane] Your interest seems slightly legitimate, but the World Cup is at the top of the pyramid.

If you ask the players, they will consider their test exploits way more significant than their achievements in the shorter formats of the game. For example, most players would rate the recently drawn test series in South Africa way higher than the T20 WC in 2007. But winning the WC is very important from a symbolic/stature perspective. Everyone remembers that we beat the all-marauding West Indies in 83 that was part of a famous WC win, but how many even know that the same Indian team got their asses handed to them by the same West Indian team in an ODI series only months later? I am guessing not a lot. THAT is the power of the world cup – its far more popular among fans and is a great advertisement tool. And a vast proportion of the fans can identify with a world cup far more than a hard fought drawn test series in South Africa. But beyond anything else, a WC win is a great money spinner for everyone involved – cricketers, sponsors, BCCI, cricket equipment manufacturers. TV sales soar every time world season comes around in India. Bat manufacturers have reported sky-rocketing sales every time we do well in the WC. The sponsors get access to a captive audience of 100s of millions of young people – their dream demographic. BCCI rakes in the moolah from the sponsors, State cricket associations make a windfall as well. So in essence, it is in the interest of these guys to hype this tournament up and our mediocre media, ever looking for an excuse to whip up part-jingoistic, part-nationalist sentiments, is only too happy to pounce on it. So yes, in terms of ACTUAL cricketing achievement, the WC is over-rated. (Remember Andrew Symonds comment about the Indian team’s decision to go on an open-top bus parade after the 2007 T20 WC win?). But in terms of everything else, it is beyond a shadow of doubt, the biggest money-spinner in the cricketing calendar. And in today’s world, that’s all that really matters.

If it''s not hyped enough' date=' and we are no.1 then we should win it comfortably right. 20 years from now, no one will remember that India was no. 1 in Test in the year xxxxx, but everyone remembers the WC Winners[/quote'] No I don't agree with that. Everyone remembers that WI was number one test team from later 70's to end of 80's. People talk with lot of awe and respect when they refer to that era. But does indian cricket team of 80's get same respect which WI of 80's gets, even after wining WC in 83? No, not even closer. Similarly some 20 years down the line, Indian cricket team of late noughties ('00) will be more celebrated one then the Indian cricket team of early 80's, irrespective of the fact we win WC this year or not.

Well the Windies team of the 80's was Numero 1 in all formats of the Game' date=' so Unlike what we are currently.[/quote'] They didn't win any world cup in 80's. Did they? I want that kind of dominance from Indian Team and ready to trade that off with 83 like WC win. However I won't be complaining if we win WC to go along with that kind of dominance :cantstop:

Importance was not realized until i saw the innings of Dhoni. You could feel in every shot he played "What it meant to him and team". I never expected any moment could beat my 1983 moment. But this i can say eclipsed. Main reason Dhoni innings.
