He has a lot of variations and quite a smart bowler in PPs. He can gets wickets as well, when batsman tend to go after him. Plus he is a relatively unknown commodity for most of the other teams. So the suprise factor would be there.

spectre Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 The whole country was hell bent on bashing the selectors when Chawla was picked. Now he becomes the first choice, weird. Ashwin had performed really well in the one series he played as the frontline spinner. He was the highest wicket taker in that. and he has this knack of bowling well in PPs and pickup wickets. He is one guy who was real hard to get away when batsman try to slog. We dont have anyone to fall back to, in PPs when our pacers are hit around. I would rather drop harbhajan, but i dont see that happening. I fail to understans why you guys are hell bent on playing Ashwin. We used 4 spinners in that match

I remember Munaf being criticized too, now he has to be in the 11 .... Now Sree is being criticized based on one odd game

When Piyush Chawla was included in world cup squad,lots of people raised eye brows over his inclusion.Couple of good performances on turning pitch, those people are nowhere to be found:--D. IMO Ashwin would have been a better selection in this match.I hope I am proved wrong but on this flat pitch Chawla will be ineffective.Unlike Ashwin he hardly puts on any revolutions on the ball.Although he has good control but lack of revolutions on ball does not allow him to get drift and turn on flat pitches. Comments.

Anakin Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Chawla was just too nervous today. Whenever he gave some air and bowled in good length he had them guessing. But he was way too short about 80% of times I'd guess.
zen Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Chawla shouldn't have been bowling at the death. the 2+2 combination meant that Ind didn't have too many option in the game. And because we played an extra spinner as one of the 4 bowlers, we couldn't even utilize YP bowling .... All this puts a big Q mark on going in w/ 2 spinners when we have two part timer spinners in our line up. Unless the pitch has turn or we have a seam bowling all-rounder, the 2+2 option robs us of options
Manny_Pacquiao Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 ashwin seems a better bowler than chawla in that he is harder to hit. but chawla has wicket taking deliveries i guess its time to try ashwin, lets see what he can do. i havent lost faith in 2+2, its still the best option for india. ashwin/chawla are better than sreesanth/nehra.

Zak/Munaf/Harby are a must. One option to try is both Ashwin and Chawla instead of YKP as I am not sure when we will need YKP's services and even if we do if he can deliver much with the bat. So a 2+3 may be, but definitely not 3+1 or 3+2.

He was asking too much from his inexpereinced leggie to bowl the second last over and that was the turning point of the game. Dhoni should have bowled him instead of Bhajji in that Powerplay and Zak should have been saved for the second last over. Had Zak bowled the second last over may be, we would have not given more than 8-9 runs in that over and prolly would have won the game. But it was his instinctive move and lets accept his decision. But Chawla did bowl well, that ground wasn't the easiest to bowl, short boundaries, quick outfields, never easy fro spinners to defend any target on that ground.
