daryl1985 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Before the world cup i was doubting his effectiveness in ODI's. He has really stepped up to the plate, he is the leader of this attack and is crucial to our world cup hopes. Also, Ashwin must start for the rest of the World Cup.

NareshK Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Sometimes you need to bowl at a slower pace to get swing and Zaheer is primarily a swing bowler. On Indian conditions especially, more pace means ball comes on to the bat more quickly. So extra pace wouldnt matter much.

IMO he's in the top 3 in the current line up of the best bowlers around.
ganeshran Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 ^^ IMO zaheer is the best left arm seamer in the world now. He gets very good movement and reverse swing too. He has great control too. As i said in a previous post, he is very good and the only thing keeping him from the great tag is the pace. If we was able to consistently bowl 90-92 mph and get the same level of movement, he would be awesome Johnson is just ineffective in ODIs now.

People who doesn't give credit to him are those who just look at his over all bowling record and not the way he is playing for last 4-5years. They are still in denial mode and let them be. But Who has followed Zaheer's bowling in Last 4-5 years will certainly consider him one of the best going around.
vamos_rafa Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 ^^^ One thing that's worth pointing out is his lack of pace as compared to someone like Steyn, who is arguably the best fast bowler around and I think Steyn is a better exponent of the newer ball. But if you compare the 2's usage of the older ball then things really tend to even up. There's not much separating the 2 (IMO i.e.) but still Steyn is given much more credit as compared to Zak. Don't forget, Steyn has a very able partner in Morkel, while Zak has to contend with a new idiotic partner every day!!

Prakat Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 It's a batsman's game, but Zaheer has carried the Indian bowling basically on his own. 15 wickets, an average of 15, and ER of 4.3. Not just the numbers it's been the timing of his wickets - brought India back into the match against England when we had lost for all practical purposes, the death bowling against South Africa to give Nehra a very defendable total, and again Smith's wicket against WI. For me he has been India's MVP. :two_thumbs_up: It's great to see him bowling at his best in the WC. If he hadn't done so we would have been out in the group stages.

We only had the Prasads and Kuruviallas to back them up. After Kapil-Prabhakar we have never found another good seam opening attack till date. Till the time we develop the next good pacer maybe Zak would retire and then he too would be the lone ranger in the team. In the mid 2000s we had perhaps the fastest burst of quality bowlers with IP, RP, Nehra etc. but all of them lost their touch very soon. Hope that we find another quality bowler soon.
