Not sure if this is right thread

Is it true that in a recent book five Australian Test players didn't select Don Bradman in their best-ever Aussie team? asked Brian Collins from London It is indeed. The book in question is a great slab of a thing called Australia: Story of a Cricket Country, edited by Chris Ryan, an old colleague of mine on Wisden Cricket Monthly, and published in Australia by Hardie Grant. It's a lavishly illustrated anthology of some of the best Aussie cricket writing - some of the pictures are quite superb (as are Ryan's captions) - but an original feature was that he wrote to all the surviving Australian Test players asking them to choose the five players they thought were the country's five greatest cricketers. No fewer than 121 replied, of which 116 voted for Bradman - but five didn't (he still came out on top, just ahead of Shane Warne with 109). One of them was Tony Dell, who played two Tests in the early 1970s: he explained that "while he was the best bat of his time, footage of opposition bowlers leads me to believe that he would not have fared well in the Chappell era". The identity of the other four non-Donners is not divulged, so we can all have fun imagining who they might be!

^ Because someone challenged belief of some of the so called cricket gurus of ICF... Nothing personal...... If they can argue that don is as great as he has been made to believe. I will accept it..... But I hope cricket gurus here will clarify their stand instead of using mob lynch mentality.... Belive me.. I really believe its above mentality and nothing else, is actual reasoning to DB....

Yea, we need to restart every discussion that has ever occurred just because you had this doubt suddenly about Don Bradman's greatness. :giggle: How about reading those threads which BB posted? Every argument known to man has been put forth there from all sides.

Bradman was left out of the list by 5 players owing to personal reasons and not cricketing ones. What I've read about Bradman, he was a self centered individual and lot of players in his playing days, such as O'Reilly openly opposed him and didn't get along well. In fact there's an account that when Bradman got out for a duck in his last innings O'Reilly and another player couldn't control their laughter and were laughing hard even when Don entered the dressing room. Doesn't change the fact that he was the greatest batsman, and probably the greatest cricketer, in the world.

Just a guess though.

I don't think that Bradman played the same game of cricket as is played nowadays. He should not be compared to the professional players of today. If he played today he might have been a tremendous success or a big failure . We will never know. Remember Graeme Hick ? He was tremendous in county cricket for 7 years or so but failed big time on the international stage. Professional sports is like a tremendously competitive job or business. That is what even the game of cricket is nowadays ( I am talking about how the game is played nowadays and not the business associated with the game ) whereas unprofessional sport is like an art practiced for the sake of art. The quality of an average international cricketer nowadays is much much better than Bradman's era, there is so much professionalism involved. Bradman was like an artist, a very very good one, the best of his era, but how good a '" competittive businessman " he would have been we will never know. He might have been a very good one or a very ordinary one.

But, I have also read that Bradman was a pretty self-centred person. Don't know how right or wrong that is. BTW, I saw your name in the ESPN Cricinfo commentary, where you took a jibe at Nitin Sundar for not being paid by BCCI :--D. Was it you?

I have never seen any evidence other than his international average of tests as mark of his greatness. Yes he was well above the rest during his era But was he actually any way near to Lara or Richards. He has best average against India where probably some Nawabs were bowling. He has relatively very poor average when Larwood used bodyline. He even has poorer average in first class cricket than internationals. His batting average to me simply suggest extremely poor quality of bowling and poor quality of cricket in general during that era. To me he is most overrated player not only in Cricket but probably in history of any sports.
Wait! why isn't Tendulkar mentioned there. Or is it a given that he is greatest ever ?
