Mariyam Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Has any one on ICF a management degree in family business? Any recommendations or suggestions, in Mumbai or other parts of India? I'm basically looking for a course that can teach the basics like financial accounting, valuating business propositions, balance sheet reading, production techniques and ergonomics. The idea is to learn as much as possible, so I shouldn't have a :WTF: moment, should the need arise. Deeper finance related topics, HR etc are not so important ( to me at least). The focus is mainly for smooth transition and ability to come to terms with business realities. The degree per se doesn't mean much, and neither does the networking in the Business School. Any consolidated site for the same? Any college reccos? Are these courses customized? Weekend/ Part time courses? In Mumbai, SP Jain has a family business MBA. Unfortunately, it is a residential course. Unless absolutely necessary, I would prefer a non residential course.

fineleg Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 @Yam - I dont know if you can 'audit' courses in India. Audit means you dont have to take exams, but you still attend classes and learn (based on your appetite for learning). Thats a popular thing here.

IIMs, ISB and most other top rung B-schools like XLRI, SP Jain etc do take GMAT scores for the 1-year MBA programs. For their regular MBA courses though, CAT and XAT scores are what they look at.

Haven't heard of the term MBA in family business before but may be it is prevalent in India .... Many B-schools have online versions or E-MBA, which is a mix of online and a few classes I was accepted to the MBA programs of the following B-School but didn't pursue: 1. Instituto de Empreza - Spain 2. Theseus - France 3. Tuck* - USA I might apply to Rotman in Toronto in future (but I don't think I am destined to study further. I can't even finish reading a book now-a-days :P)

From what I understand, top MBA programs (not sure about India) do recommend that you to have 2-3 years of work experience at least. You may even find folks with 10-15 years of work experince in a class. To understand what 'real' MBA is, explore programs like the one at INSEAD
