At the beginning, the water was still, so they probably underestimated it and thought it would die down again, but it just kept getting bigger. RIP.

What a waste of lives! Really insane and sad. There was a caution board informing people about how many people had died there. It is shocking how educated people will refuse to see reason .Who takes such risks during monsoon? The channels are going to town why the fall wasn't cordoned out with wire .When people don't want to use there brains what can wires do. Sad loss.

^ so they should fence all the drains' date=' rivers, canals, beaches because people dont realize that they can drown [/quote'] That turned from a gentle stream to a torrent in no time. That would've caught anyone off guard.

It is very common in monsoons sree.Flash floods....educated adults are expected to know that water from the rain in the nearby areas joins the streams and rivers. Most of these streams are dry during most times but get flooded during rains. This is the month of july . The country is in the thick of monsoons. The name of the place is Paatalpani......roughly translated....hell water.

That is mortifying. Cannot believe an entire family of 5 got wiped out because of a moment of laxity. And seeing them cling on to each other in the end was so poignant and depressing. :((
I read elsewhere two members managed to swim to safety while 3 died

this is difficult to watch and could have been avoided.I was also reading on HUff where 2 hikers were swept over vernal falls in yosemite NP.I have been to the top of the falls and it is the responsibility if the tourists there to be vigilant because there is not much there separating them from the water.

It is unbelievable to see nearly 20+ people were watching the fall from the cliff before a sudden water flow was noticed with loud sound of flowing water from distance. But those who didnt react fast were trapped in it. the poor girl on the front did have a chance but she didn;t move fast enough waited for others. RIP.

I think they underestimated the flow and this is India, everyone thinks they are a hero and don't take warning seriously. Unless there were no visible warning signs

Can anyone update on who survived and who didn't? 2 survived, 3 didnt but I'd be interested to know whom out of that lot were those 2 lucky people and how did they manage to survive?...

Wonder why they were standing there . I know their family members had to come. Still your first instinct should be to get to satefy . That holding hand.. worst strategy .

Onlookers are to be blamed as well. In 3-4 mins they saw and did nothing. They could have done either one of these: 1 - Create a human chain and drag all of them at once as those 5 people would have created a chain at their end too (one by one) 2 - Use their pants. Tie the pants together to form a big rope and throw it to those 5 stuck people. 3- Use a big branch of tree from nearabouts But its so sad to see they did nothing at all except for shouting and watching. Ponka blames the guy who gave the idea for such idiotic act and the rest of the people too for acting upon it.

Thanks Beetle for the clarification.

Sad. RIP. It wouldn't be difficult to install a couple of solar-powered sensors a few kilometers upstream that set off sirens when the water level rises above a point. That way people in that place will have advance warning about the incoming flow and clear out to safety.

They had only like, 5 seconds to react. Don't see that happening in 5 seconds...

It looks like no one expected the situation to go out of hand so quickly...including the victims. According to the news one of the survivors was trying to rescue. Looks like the father moved towards the girl to get her to safety first . There have been many more such videos shown on news these days where the onlookers helped the people out of the situation. There is one where a little naked boy who had gone in the river to take a bath got caught. He stood firm on a rock for a long tome while the onlookers tried to rescue him with sticks, saarees. Finally he got swept away by the water...seeing this a whole lot of people jumped into the raging water and got him out. That was a happy ending.
