Does Technique matter?

People talk so much about right technique, front foot, back foot....blah blah blah.....But is it important? But one man who is consistently ranking top 5 in ICC test ranking from last few years, shows that it's really not important. He is none other than mr shiv chanderpaul. Ungainly stance, lazy shots and nothing fascinates about him. So cricket is all their in the mind. It is about attitude and self-belief. What do u say guyzzz??

The only thing that matters is results, i.e. scoring runs and taking wkts. Technique is just an enabler to help you do so and increases the probability of you being successful but it's not the be all and end all. If technique was everything and there were "style points" awarded, you will have Manjrekar next to Bradman with Sehwag not even making it to club level.

Yes. If there is weakness in your technique, then good bowlers in their favorable conditions will exploit it. Though no batsman has perfect technique IMO. Some have better than others. I feel Chanderpaul's stance is ugly but there is not much wrong with his technique.

Yes,look at someone like Cook....has a solid technique and once he figured out the ODI games is scoring buckets of runs....same thing goes for R.D who has a terrific ODI record....At the end of the day these guys will have better records than say someone like Jayasuriya or even Sehwag who are freakish players.

Technique is purists delight. What ultimately matters is your contribution to your team's success. Chanderpaul is not an example of bad technique, he is an example of bad elegance. Technique is not about looking elegant but more to do with the art of playing.

Not really..as long as you are able to score runs in different and difficult conditions..it does not matter if you are playing with a proper technique or not.

I think the most important thing is to get in the right positions for facing any delivery. Technique is an enabler to that but there are some like Pollock or sehwag, who might not have the best technique per se but are able to play the delivery correctly. As for Shiv, his stance is ugly but technique is pretty good IMO.

Firstly, what exactly defines technique? Imo, technique is basically smth which a person in the past had used and done successfully. Thus, it then becomes a benchmark and requirements for future players. But the thing is benchmarking does not mean it is only way to succeed and really does not guarantee success itself. You need to innovate and bring your own methods. And sometimes, when those fail, fans question where is the used and tested techniques?
