Swann and Prior at no stage were going to win the match they just threw their bats around especially Swann after tea they had nothing to lose really, so don't ever think it was a close match. India did better job to defend rank 1 by winning 3 away series and 2 home series as no 1 unlike England who could win only 1 match away from home and lost a series 2-nil at home. You can see bulldog spirit from India when they won in Mohali, got back in series by winning 2nd test in SA after losing 1st by inning, drawing test by playing for 2 in NZ and saving test series in SL. All those were tough moments for the team, they not only fought but were successful in doing so.
