BeautifulGame Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 ^ Virat Kohli made his debut in 2008 - the same year in which he won the U19 WC. If I'm not wrong' date=' it was just 2 months after the victory.[/quote'] Maybe i am wrong. But i remember him having a solid domestic record behind him before he was selected. Will check statsguru though
Crookbond Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Maybe i am wrong. But i remember him having a solid domestic record behind him before he was selected. Will check statsguru though Which is exactly the point Chappell is making - pick players on ability/skill not on age.
rkt.india Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 yeah! he is now averaging 28 in this tourny. sure he is the future opener of indian cricket ......NOT!! :hysterical: and perth and hobart are flat track?? lol you sir are a joker. Yeah Perth was flat when SA chased 414, hobart was flat when India chased 321 in 37 overs. Nature of the pitch changes and depends on curator if he want a seaming track or a flat one. Those were real flat tracks while batting this time has been rather tough that can be the only reason the average score here was 192. Regarding average 28, he played all matches here. I am not saying he is a finished article, but he has fought it out. Look at his off side shots, they ooze class and not just me, commies have also talked about him a lot.
BeautifulGame Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 My issue the likes of Chand and Harmeet must perform in Ranji trophy and A tours(chand is already selected IIRC) before being selected.Shouldnt be selected on the basis of U-19 world cup as Chappel is saying.

Chappeli is not asking them to be "selected" but to be "considered for selection" and make them play above their league - 'A' tours, County, Ranji Trophy rather than making compete at U19. The very best players need to be constantly challenged from a young age, and that means regularly being upgraded when they have success at a lower level. I totally agree with this else you will have Yere Gouds, Sairaj Bahutule and Badrinath's in the making rather than the Tendulkars, Kohlis and Harbhajan Singhs. The problem with the Ranji Trophy is that it does not guarantee merit. I want to select people based on 'A' tours and not Ranji trophy. County would be awesome but BCCI doesn't give players the NOC to play there :banghead:

Even Tendulkar did a year of Ranji before he was considered for national selection..
Trichromatic Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/579325.html 1. Says Harmeet and Unmukt Chand are ready for Internationals (plausible) He really rates them. :nice: 2. Continued playing of them in U-19 WC isn't right :WTF: He is right. They should play higher level of cricket. 3. Harmeet would be get into any national test side as its best spinner barring England :hysterical: (Poor Ajmal, Ashwin & Shakib) Yeah, he won't get chance in England because they play only 1 spinners. Other teams (India, Pak, Bang, SL) play 2 spinners, so can always get chance easily if he is selected into 15. Poor chap is bitten with envy that we are giving them Aussies a hiding and is blaming us for making them play in U-19 WC instead of the senior side :cantstop: :hmmm:
panther Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 none of these pacers will make it imo. the spinner and chand have the best chance.

Sooda Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Yes it has to be both, U19 success followed by A team and FC success ideally. Even with bowlers, I cant help thinking that Ishant for instance would have been better had he had a few FC seasons under his belt before India Senior cricket...just having bowled lost of overs and working out any chinks in his technique whilst not under the harsh spotlight of test cricket would have been good- ditto for Irfan and RPS, guys who started test cricket at like 19 or 20...sadly the serious dearth of good pacemen mean these guys and more recently Unadkat have had to be fast tracked. Batsmen like Pujara have benefitted from the long wait that our strong middle order has forced on them and the fact that they have had to play a good amount of cricket for A team and BP Xis/....the 'bigger challenge' for an U19 cricketer is that...Ranji cricket and A team cricket... not an India senior team call up.. We havent been playing nearly enough A team cricket, unlike England, to have guys picked based on A team form..but hopefully that seems to be changing
Crookbond Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Unmukt has aready a FC 100... et him have a reasonable stint there... Even Tendulkar did a year of Ranji before he was considered for national selection.. The question to be asked - Is our FC cricket good enough to test their skills? In 11 games, Chand has 1x100's and 4x50's. He's in the FC side since 2010. He scored 151 against Mumbai on a seaming track in 2010-11 and 400 runs in 5 matches. How is playing FC helping him? He should be on every god damn 'A' tour out there - he is already, which is good & performance on 'A' tours will help him reach the international level. Chand is a teen age prodigy and a different method of action will only benefit him and the team.
Raghav_12 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Don't see anything wrong with what Chappell said. He is right that there is no point in keeping players in age group when they would be better off by competing at higher level. What if Boris Becker had played junior wimbledon in 1985? In between, was Pat Cummins available for selection for this WC? I think he is still 19, so could have been chosen for this WC. (Not that it would have made any difference to Unmukt Chand :winky:)

We havent been playing nearly enough A team cricket, unlike England, to have guys picked based on A team form..but hopefully that seems to be changing Ishant should have been on more 'A' tours and intermittently in the international team not Ranji cricket because the quality is not that great. Our bowlers gain nothing from bowling on flat, low pitches. It only makes them lose pace and doubt their abilities. Zaheer Khan will tell that bowling 600 overs in a season in county cricket is an excellent way to prepare mentally and physically, Ranji cricket will not give you much help. Pujara was blooded in at the right time in 2010.
bajrang Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Yeah Perth was flat when SA chased 414' date=' hobart was flat when India chased 321 in 37 overs. [/quote'] surely no test team in world can chase 414 on a seaming track . not even south africa. nor can the number one ODI team chase 321 on a helpful pitch. thank you for this wonderful info.i accept my defeat plese continue on what you were doing before. :two_thumbs_up:
Number Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 They will anyway compete at the higher level as they are well over 19. Harmeet already has got some success at the FC level. Same for Unmukt . But I feel Chappel is getting overexcited. Look at Yuvraj , he was fast tracked after being man of the tournament in U19 world cup. That made him skip a lot of FC seasons and he was probably the most talented batsmen of the generation but couldn't develop the temperament and concentration to play long innings in tests. A good FC season or 2 are must for batsmen, IMO.
BeautifulGame Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 The ideal setup should be Age group tournaments then Ranji trophy and A tours and then finally National team callup. For that we need to play a lot more India A tours which BCCI now seams to be arranging.

Swann is not even in top ten
rkt.india Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Cummins would have played but got injured. Jamie overton was as quick as Cummins.
