In the last 4 test matches in OT, Swann and Panesar have had two 5 wicket hauls each, Monty has had two 6 fers in fact. Vettori has one too. Wicket takes spin by 3rd day at least. So two spinners is very wise, not least because Ash can bat, as he showed today, as can Jadeja as he showed at Lords. As for batting first, yes it was cloudy first up but who knew how long that would last, generally it is not a bad pitch to bat on, any commentator was saying to bat first. With rain forecast batting first was not wrong thing to do. Cook would have batted first too.
