Lurker Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Standing at the Immigration counter of Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, I couldn't help but overhear the discussions ongoing at the next counter. An elderly lady with a young daughter being interviewed by the Immigration guy. Oji bauji wo na main apni ye beti nu larka dekhne gayi thi na. Benji ki baat karai se? Kaun launda na karego is chaand si chori se shaadi. Aur duji baat ye ke ab ye desh wo na reha. Yeh Airport world be number 2 Airport hai, ab bahar jaane ki jaroorat na hai. By the time I reach my brothers place, the Delhi Airport has slipped to number 5 in world ranking depending on who you ask, but what remains true is Delhi International Airport is the best in the country far ahead of Mumbai and Bangalore for sure, and better than Newark, Heathrow, Chicago and LAX, all airports I have visited in past 6 months. We can surely nitpick on why Sahar is still ahead, or why Bangalore has cleaner bathrooms and why LAX is considered a country in itself, but fact remains Delhi is clearly on the up, and the exaggeration observed these days about NCR has more than a grain of salt of truth to it. ********************************************************** Nalli's at South-Ex is my Mom's favorite joint for buying saris. Thats where we are with my Mom rummaging through Kanchipuram Silk to Banaresi Tussar, and my Bhabhi asking for sarees with chauda border. I love to a be a fly on the wall at Nalli's. You can see a girl coming in a jeans and top, picking a sari, wrapping it around her and watch herself in the mirror. And in that instant she changes completely. There is no style of cloth that changes a person as much as sari does instantly. It is also pervertedly erotic to see a stack of female taking off their sari! Two hours, 6 saris later we are a spent force and off we head to Green Park for a most sumptuous chole Bhature at Bikanerwaala. ********************************************************** Sector 56, Gurgaon is where I am staying at and in the evening I visit our local mall. These are far smaller than the Ambience and Ansal Plaza, but have more than enough stores and goodies to take care of ur needs. I walk through a few of these and it is fascinating to see that every second store has Salesgirls from North East. Is it purely coincidence? Or is it a norm to see North Eastern girls see as Salespersons? One of these come over to help me pick an item and struggles with broken English. I switch to Hindi and she is dharapravaah! Turns out she is from Sikkim and a student here picking extra cash on the way. I swear this is not gonna be about language brawl but it would be a lie if I didnt mention it left me smiling. ********************************************************** Indian Men may not have a whole lot going for them these days but they do have access to the absolute godamnn best shirts in the world. No other country, and I mean NO other country, in the world has the combinations that are on offer for men in India. Great material, great style, vibrant colors, half sleeves, full sleeves, collared down, no collars, you name it. I feel like a kid in a candystore. 5 minutes in and 5 shirts selected already. My brother is laughing. Slow down this is Reliance Trendz, we are visiting Color Plus, Park Avenue, Allen Solly etc next....Who said men dont like shopping?? ********************************************************** On the streets you see women covering their face with their duppatta to keep away the dhool. You see them like that walking, on scooters, buses etc. Nothing new there except now you see them tinkering with a cellphone in hands. To a newcomer they come across as terrorists ready to blow up something. Maybe thats why Desi Police has barricade thrown off at every corner. ********************************************************** Got challenged by my brother to eat 2 Raj-kachaudis, the big sumptuous kachaudis that are filled with stuffings, sweet dahi and other condiments. I love it and after a year plus of fitness diet let myself go. It is delightful in a very sinful way. I beat my brothers odds and dive into a 3rd one, by the time it is done I am starting to feel sleepy. He loads me in the car, the big brother of mine, switches on his stereo and drives away. As the song hums Jab koi baat bigad jaaye, I fall asleep on the Golf course Road. It is nice to be home. xxxx
EnterTheVoid Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 You clearly haven't visited Hyderabad airport, either the old or the new, to appreciate the transform. Pity it is named after a crook.

coffee_rules Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Hyd and Bangalore are about the same. Same builder maybe. Bangalore has those small taxis, for a large family we had to hire 2 of them or go for one big toyota whatever. It's always nice to visit India esp this festival time of the year

Cricketics Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Yaar Lurker man. I wish I can go back tomorrow and live and enjoy the life in Delhi like you are doing. I haven't been there for long long time now. 9th year running but I know I will be there sometime soon when everything is sorted out and I will enjoy. I know country has changed as people keep saying, but there are lot of things and lot of nostalgic memories which will always keep me happy when I am in Delhi. Especially when you share those anecdotes, it makes me want to go back today.
