DomainK Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 We laughed at the khap panchayat guys when they said that chicken chowmin leads to rape. Take a look at this: New Delhi: When a Khap leader recently suggested that eating chow mein is linked to the incidence of rape, it was widely criticised by all quarters. But now it seems, that it may not be an isolated idea. NDTV has accessed a Class 6 textbook published by the reputed S Chand publishers which also makes a similar point, and in fact, may even be going further. The book titled 'New Healthway - Health, Hygiene, Physiology, Safety, Sex Education, Games and Exercises' blames many ills of society on non-vegetarians. For example, it says: "They easily cheat, tell lies, they forget promises, they are dishonest and tell bad words, steal, fight and turn to violence and commit sex crimes.'' That's not all - on the same page 56, the book goes on to credit the tastiness of meat by saying that "it is the waste products which largely produce the flavour of meat." And you may have known Japan as the land of sushi and sea food, but the book lauds the Japanese for their vegetarian diet, which they say leads to a longer life span. "They are vegetarians and live longer than most other peoples. The generous use of green leafy vegetables, soya beans and grams has helped the people to maintain vigour, strength and endurance throughout the centuries'' - there is no mention of the fish in Japanese diet. But diet isn't the only issue that's raised in the book. While talking about life lessons, the book advocates marriage for girls between 18 to 25 - "To get married without a bad name is a dream of every young girl." S Chand books are widely used by various school boards across the country. Dr Janaki Rajan of the Faculty of Education in Jamia University who was part of a CABE committee report on textbooks in 2005 told NDTV - "Since 1985 there have been concerns about what has been propagated by private publishers. An excellent report has been presented to the government but no action has been taken since." The same committee had advocated a National Textbook Council to oversee and approve content but that was rejected by states earlier this year. S Chand is yet to comment on this. So, children, whats the lesson you learned today? 1. Non vegetarians are bad people. They commit heinous crimes and live a bad and unhealthy life. 2. Japanese are vegetarians (sushi must be a myth), that's why they live long and healthy lives. 3. A girl that does not get married between 18 and 25 gets a bad name.

He gave them fruits, nuts and vegetables," reads a chapter entitled Do We Need Flesh Food?
