CG Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 ^ Everyone bowled well and yet he was struggling. Took the two best batsman and had one catch dropped.Yes he was not tight today. But we needed wickets.
CG Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 It was disciplined bowling," he said. Asked why R Ashwin was sent ahead of Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni replied, "For us he is a contributory cricketer. Ashwin is a proper batsman, so we thought if I and Ashwin can have a partnership and then Jadeja can express himself (later on)."

Ashwin yet to perform in a proper test match out of the 8 he has played with the ball. To get into test side he needs to fight with Rahane, Rohit etc for a place. I think the others are more talented. Some real filth again. Absolutely no control at all. Ball is turning and he can't get the line right. Also chucks in too many full tosses/short balls. This.
suraj Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Very disappointing and frightening that we don't even have a decent spinner anymore
Aum Universe Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Ojha number 1 spinner. Accurate/tight and chips in with wickets. Problem is, even if he has a decent bowling average, he has to bowl many overs to get wickets. Poor SR. Still he is reliable. in Vettori mould. Ashwin has a lot to learn but wouldn't write him off.
Muloghonto Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I think we are being : a) too hasty in writing off Ashwin. He is a spinner and there havn't been that many spinners who rocked it up so early in their careers for quite a while. Even warne and murali were crappish in their first few, though ashwin will never get that good IMO. b) Ashwin is, along with Jadeja, our prime all-rounder candidate. He has good batting instincts and even though he hasn't played a pivotal knock yet, he's done well with the bat. IMO, he can be a very effective #7 in test cricket and what we should be expecting from his is 35-40ish average with the bat and 30-35 average with the ball as a 2nd spinner. IMO, what Ashwin is currently, is an ideal 2nd spinner- the guy with the variations but not much control. Ie, a stuey McGill type in his early days. Trouble is, he is not good enough yet to be a 1st line spinner and IMO, he still should be our test spinner against Australia and in the near future for a few reasons: a) Aussies have 6-7 left handers in their top 8, thats an offie's dream. b) after the Aussies, our FTP is 3tests in RSA, 3 in NZ, 5 in ENG, 3 at home vs WI and then 4 in OZ. Given our batting brittleness and the newbieness of our middle order (and Sehwag is *not* going to be consistent- he may utterly fail in those lands or score a couple of massive ones when he gets set in, but he wont put up 4 tons and 6 fifties in 25 innings kinda fellow overseas), we will need his batting to extend our tail. Not that Ravi is going to be massively less effective overseas as a spinner anyways as almost all our spinners are uninspiring away from home (even Kumble, till the last half of his career, was totally mediocre overseas) so IMO, he is a good guy to have around for the next little while.

kubrickian Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 With the advent of media and websites, too many people without proper knowledge of cricket are getting the opportunity to air their opinions and they have nothing better to do than sit at home and write off any new player who doesnt pick a fifer or score a century in every game. Even Kumble or Sachin didnt start winning man of the series awards in every series they played. Check how many innings it took for Sachin to score his first century and what his average was for the first 70-80 ODIs. Give new players some chances before you write them off. This guy was the fastest Indian bowler to pick 50 wickets in tests and one series later, he becomes crap ? Let him work on his flaws and become a better bowler. Just chopping and changing wont do anyone any good.
CSK Fan Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Took the two best batsman and had one catch dropped.Yes he was not tight today. But we needed wickets. Dont forget the LBW which was denied. And one of the wickets was the most important wicket of Nasir
CSK Fan Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Ojha can do the job' date=' but nothing special. Ashwin is chit. Sad how Indian spinners have declined, no genuine match winners like Bhaji and Kumble in their prime. Depressing as fark to watch.[/quote'] Err, based on one series Ashwin is bad? What was Warne's or Murali's average after 4-5 series?
Muloghonto Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I think the whole notion of Indian spinners vs English batsmen is a bit overbloated. What we are failing to realize is, the English had worked like dogs against two vastly superior spinners- Swann and Monty, who lets face it, one (Swann) would make it into post 70s India team quite easily (except perhaps the Bhajji-kumble era) and another who would be easily better than most we've turned up in 30 years ( Monty, who is ages better than the Hirwanis, Chauhans, Rajus of the world) and as such, we built a silly hype- we decieded to try and cower England with spin when first time since our grandpas were kids (Lock and Laker era) that England actually has two worldclass spinners in their ranks. And to an extent our players bought it and got frustrated quickly. Not to worry, they are mostly pretty young and should learn from this. The seniors should feel a bit silly but move on.

vvvslaxman Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Ashwin's faster delivery is the problem. Variation of pace is effective when you the difference is significantly high. Ajmal with his short stature and trajectory , his 110 kph balls give you absolutely no time. Ashwin rarely crosses 95 kph. Ashwin is taller. On Indian surfaces you need a bit of pace for spinners as well on most surfaces. Also lot of revs are needed like Swann, Monty. Ashwin can definitely get better. At worst he can be our 5th bowling option.
putrevus Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Ashwin cannot be in the team if he picks up odd wicket here and there that too in India. He has not shown any ability so far that he can be match winner against good side both in tests and Odis. Bhajji was discarded rightly so because he was darting and had become more of a run stopper than a wicket taker in odis.He started blaming his lack of wickets on pitches and toss. Ashwin has been major disappointment in tests both in Australia and against England.Australia can be excused to some extent but failures against England are very troublesome and he is going the same path as Bhajji being in the team more for his batting than his bowling. If he cannot be match winner in India then somebody else needs to take his place in playing eleven.

Bhajji was a slogger, not reliable as a batsman. He is a proper batsman. He can easily play as an alrounder at 6-7 even in tests.
vandokkum Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Might do decently against weak opposition at home (Nz, Wi) but other than that he is not a test bowler by any means. Should stick to t20 or play as a batsman, not a bowler. Will struggle mightily away from home.
yoda Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Time for him to do a Ravi Shastri and become a test opener. He can be a good 5th bowler in ODIs and T20s and an option in tests, but he can't be our primary spinner in tests.
vvvslaxman Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Time for him to do a shastri and become a test opener. Story of TN players. Make news at first then slowly go away from the scene.
