Vilander Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Gambhir. We have no other choice. Gambhir might do well if he is made captain, but some how Dhoni the bat/wc should be retained.
The Outsider Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Gambhir or Sehwag as captain? Non performance is the reason why Dhoni is being sacked and he should be replaced by either of these two who have themselves done absolutely nothing and were close to getting dropped before this series? Also having either of them as captain would mean the ego clashes in the team would go on and continue to sink the team further. Better thing to do would be to give Kohli the captaincy with the board's full backing. Non performance is just one aspect. Yeah, all have been non performers, but more importantly the team needs some new leadership and a break from Dhoni's moronic captaincy. Having said that, Sehwag has been getting starts and did score a century in the series. The only time the English team looked to lacking control of the game was when Sehwag and Pujara batted at Ahmedabad and during the opening partnership at Calcutta. Sehwag remains a key player and while moving him from the opening spot is certainly an option, he should stay in the team. Gambhir did show some fight in this series, but looked patchy nonetheless and he won'tbe my number 1 choice. I have been one of the most vocal Kohli backers on this board for years now, but I don't think he has established his spot in the team yet. Moreover, his game in tests requires another 1-2 years before we can call him a world class test batsmen. At this crucial stage of his career, I don't think giving him the captaincy is a great idea. We just mind end up losing a batsman who can have a 10+ year test career.
Sidhoni Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 How do you know that Kohli/Gambhir/someone else will do worse ? Gambhir shouldn't be in the team for starters given the poor performance in last 1 year.
VRV Singh Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 We are nearing the three year anniversary of Gambhir's last hundred. B->
Clarke Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Gambhir shouldn't be in the team for starters given the poor performance in last 1 year. Last year's performances ? I thought you were ignoring that based on your support for Dhoni as player/captain. Besides, Kohli & others are potential candidates now that Dhoni's leadership has brought us to the worst possible phase in decades. Any comments on Kohli/Pujara/others ?

Pagalpanti Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Gambhir - big match player? Stop mixing formats, Gambhir didn't stand up in any of the 0-8 humiliating losses. Kohli has 2 century to show for his case in tough situations.
maniac Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Start off with T20 captaincy for Kohli... Might help Dhoni to play freely as he can be a valuable asset in the format and we will atleast get a glimpse of things to come from Kohli in the leadership role.
Clarke Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 ^ What's there to lead in T20 ? We're absolute crap at it and the format is about slogs & darts, not strategy and character.
maniac Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 ^ What's there to lead in T20 ? We're absolute crap at it and the format is about slogs & darts' date=' not strategy and character.[/quote'] No matter what we think about T20 ,the fact is most games go till the end....momentum shifts pretty fast and pressure shifts back and forth pretty fast We or even some players may not respect the format but it can be challenging enough for a youngster. Also wasn't T20 the first foundation that led to Dhoni's elevation as a captain...I mean we could see his qualities like soaking up pressure, etc. Though I still think he got extremely lucky with the dumb strategy of letting Jogi bowl the last over though. Fast forward many years later-Dhoni is good at handling pressure but tactically a poor captain.
Clarke Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 ^ So lets not push Kohli in the same direction as Dhoni. Other than that, playing for/leading any T20 side requires a different set of skills (for better or worse). I don't see a reason in testing that to determine test captaincy. We've been trash in T20 due to horrendous bowling coupled with the FTBs unable to face short deliveries; there doesn't seem to be any respite. Judging Kohli's captaincy in that format with the expected losses isn't going to be worthwhile, besides it being an irrelavant test.
Number Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Indian captains suck as a player. Dravid avged in low 40s . Ganguly, who was as promising as Dravid in 96-00, became a walking wicket in the most part of his captaincy career. Dhoni has gone downhill. Sachin was never the player he once was after his captaincy in 99-00. Looking at this trend, I would rather lose a few games than losing out on a promising youngster.
Trichromatic Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Gambhir has performed worse that Dhoni in last 2 years and India won't be able to afford a non-performing opener for 1 more year. He shouldn't be promoted with captaincy. He should be dropped and sent back to Ranji Trophy.
maniac Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Here is my assesment of Kohli,Dhoni and Gambhir for test captaincy Tests Dhoni- As a player,I feel he can still contribute,I still think he is the best WK-allrounder in India As a captain-His recent performances are self-explanatory,assuming we live in a perfect world,he needs to be kicked out Kohli As a player-Still not established at the test level as the recent series showed us....I rate his 100 in this series better if not as good as the one he scored in Australia. So there is still a lot of hope here. As a captain-Usually Succesful test captains are players who have established their place in the side and are right in the middle part of their career...not too early and not too late...with Kohli I think it's too early for test captaincy as that might have a negative effect on his batting which is still trying to find it's feet at the test level. Gambhir- As a player-He might have had a decent average in this series but as an opener in home conditions, you need someone who has big scores to his name.I would say again in a perfect world, his test match role should be under scrutiny right now As a captain-Once again I will use this term,in a perfect world,Gambhir is in the right phase of his career to be made captain but for reasons stated above his spot itself is under scrutiny..If a captain loses form you can give him a longer rope but you can't give an out of form player captaincy and extend his career.
bharat297 Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Has to be Kohli. Although he is temperamentally unstable he is at least worth a spot in the team whereas Gambhir at the moment I don't think is.
Trichromatic Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Gambhir- Pros- 1.Senior Player - Would be discarded player if he doesn't perform in 1 or 2 series. 2.Established Odi Player - Test position is in danger. 3.Has captained India in odis with success and also captained delhi - India's main problem is tests. 4.Big Match Player - Not in tests. 5.Does well as a captain - In IPL? 6.Seems to finding some form in eng series - Still wasn't convincing and couldn't stop poking Cons- 1.Struggling with form for last 2 years in Tests 2.May not have backing Of BCCI Cons Even in ODIs, his performance is not much difference from Sehwag's performance if you're not worried about SL matches. Worse player than Sehwag in tests. Can't survive in test team with current form. IPL captaincy shouldn't be used to judge anything. His selfishness with hurt team How Sehwag is not a better option?

His selfishness with hurt team How Sehwag is not a better option? 1.Why Take out Srilanka,If we take out srilanka and bangladesh Most would be averaging below 40,even kohli has scored most of his runs against lanka. 3.Averaged 42 In tests vs england 4.Gambhir won the ranji trophy as captain with delhi 5.Selfishness? 6.Shewag is 34 years old ,fitness problems,Seems unintrested
gakgupta Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Cons Even in ODIs, his performance is not much difference from Sehwag's performance if you're not worried about SL matches. Worse player than Sehwag in tests. Can't survive in test team with current form. IPL captaincy shouldn't be used to judge anything. His selfishness with hurt team How Sehwag is not a better option? Traditionally, india is not a country where we produce good openers who can handle all conditions. May be, this could be because of domestic setup. Last world class opener was gavaskar. Having said this, Gambhir is not a bad option at all. He played well in NZ in test series. I am not supporting him but considering the history of indian openers, he had done decent. Captaincy is something which should be enjoyed. Some player take it in a right spirit and would start performing better. Classic example is Micheal Clarke......He has been scoring very well after becoming a captain. I think Gambhir belongs to this category. I have seen him scoring lot's of runs in India - NZ ODi Series where he was a captain........He seems to be a nature leader....Esp in sub-continent, youngsters look up to the captain for confidence. He can inspire them and can lead them and can make them play aggresively.......On the other hand, Dhoni doesn't seem to have it in him....So many times, we have seen pace bowlers taken away from attack after couple of bad overs.....
