Sidhoni Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Simple question. Which films do you like more?
don_corleone840 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 none.i like watching tv series from usa
coffee_rules Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I prefer the best in both. So no Hollywood musicals, or wannab- hollywood bollywood movies like Ek Main Aur Ek Tu. They both have their best and worst (newer super hero movies with uber cool stunts).
Yoda-esque Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Foreign films from all over are my preference. Then Hollywood.... Then Regional Indian films.. I dont recall a single memorable Bollywood film that I have seen in the past 5 years. The last film I really liked was Johnny Gaddar.

I dont recall a single memorable Bollywood film that I have seen in the past 5 years. The last film I really liked was Johnny Gaddar. Hollywood is seriously overrated. What used to be laughed at in India as Rajnkanth and Mithun Chakrabarty nautanki gets lapped in Hollywood as special affects, then lapped in India as trend setter. Not saying Hollywood does not make good movies, but its masala movies are no different to Indian. I do concur with you on foreign films. My choice is French, Latin and Iranian. Iranian movies may hold a lesson for India on how good movies can be made with local subjects and not blind aping of the west. By the by you havent liked Gangs of Wasseypur, Paan Singh Tomar, A Wednesday etc? I thought they were terrific movies.
NareshK Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 The indie movies made in America are quality of the highest order. Great acting, writing and directing. Some of these filmmakers make movies in the studio system(Hollywood) and make great movies too. But most other movies made in Hollywood are cookie cutter, formulaic drivel like the sequels, prequels, CGI action movies etc. French, Italian, Japanese and Iran have a rich tradition in making good movies. Lately Korean movies are also getting better. Denmark, Sweden, Germany also produce quality movies but not on par with America or France. In India, some filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Nagesh Kukunoor, Vishal Bharadwaj, Farhan Akhtar, Anurag Basu are trying something new and succeeding. Rest is just loads of crap like Khiladi 786, Singham, Dabangg etc.

I did like GOW but I would not watch it again. What I liked about GOW was the treatment. Wednesday didn't do it for me.

anotherhawkeye Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Whatever your preference is, Hollywood movies are great. It's not hard to continue to watch the same type of movies you grew up watching; the movies that reflect your culture, that you can relate to. That's Bollywood. But to take a movie that you can't relate to, thats from an alien culture, whose actors look so different than you, but still make it intriguing is hard to do. So hats off to Hollywood, for making a large number of such movies.
Clarke Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Bollywood doesn't have the broad market that can absorb all kinds of themes. This minimizes the possibility of quality independent movies like District 9. Budgets must have been a problem earlier, don't think that's as much of a problem these days. For instance, Salman Khan makes Rs. 60 crore ~ $12 million for Ek Tha Tiger. Akshay Kumar makes 45 crore ~ $9 million for Rowdy Rathore. The money's there, its just going for star power and not for cinematic excellence.

Though I agree with the part you said about bollywood making decent movies amid all the filth....I disagree with your logic of holywood passing og rajni and mithun kind of masala as special effects. Keanau Reeves dodging bullets in the matrix is not the same as rajni and mithun in a bollywood movie. Now it depends in your prespective that you might find matrix as illogical but atleast therevis a justification of why he is doing that or why he has those powers within the fantasy world created
Clarke Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 ^ He might be implying movies like Expendables & Taken. Even those aren't the mega-blockbusters reserved for Eid/Diwali equivalents, they're just fillers during summer.
yoda Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Hollywood is light years ahead of Indian movies in all aspects, be it casting, make up, special effects, acting, directing, you name it. Only thing we are better at is music - songs and dances. We are catching up slowly but surely and that is a good sign.

Look up any of the Charlie's Angels, for example, to see how stupid actions can still fetch you millions worldwide.
urbestfriend Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I prefer European cinema , but Hollywood if compared with bollywood.
Yoda-esque Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Bollywood has retrograded...Watch this movie to understand the difference between films and movies. MOs1ReVcDA4
CG Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I like Bollywood movies like khosla, luvshuv, johnny gaddar, chakde, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee films but they are few in compared to the collection in europe or america and so iranian movies .
