Kannadigas are the most hidden from mainstream in India. Nobody knows how the language sounds. A friend from Chennai couldn't recognize the language when it was spoken in "Aan - Men at work", starring Akshay kumar, Suneil Shetty directed by Madhur Bhandarkar Unless you have lived in Bangalore, one will never come across this langauage in mainstream culture. No references in movies esp.

On the topic of Kannadigas it's maybe because they are the most "northern" of all southie people and do not really fit into the stereotypes of extreme Southerners that people like (Like the ones in the ads nowadays). Similar could be said of Maharashtrians although some Maharashtrian culture are shown in the movies as the movie industry is based in Mumbai. Also antics of Shiv Sena also bring it into notice. Even their capital cities like Mumbai/Bangalore are not as hardcore Marathi/Kannada as Chennai/Kolkata are hardcore Tamil/Bengali.

Yes and it was written and directed by Habib Faisal. So maybe he decided to write a story about a 'normal' muslim person in northern UP (As he himself is one) rather than the Mumbai underworld, terrorist flicks featuring Muslims.

In India they are kind of mutually exclusive. All the Punjabis (except the Bollywood ones) left during partition.

While it is true there was mass migration during Partition, Malerkotla still has a sizeable Muslim population in Indian Punjab. Even if there were no Muslim Punjabis in Indian side, it is still an incorrect to confuse religion with ethnic regions. Rafi was a Muslim and a Punjabi. Many of the Pakistanis that have recently worked in Bollywood would be Punjabis as well. There are also a few Muslim Punjabi singers on the Indian side.

I'm not confusing religion with ethnicity, just saying that Muslim Punjabis are almost negligible in India. Yes, the Bollywood people are there like Sahir Ludhianvi, Rafi, Nargis etc but most migrated coz border was near and there was plenty of violence (unlike say in UP where most stayed back).
