But fixing happened in Eng-Pak test series .Also, fixing was proved in county last season in the courts over there.So it is clear that legalizing will not be able to stop fixing. This betting is being run by underworld.Do we want to give them license to legally run their business.With their political contacts , threats to other competitors it will be monopolistic.The profits of underworld are used for doing anti social activities in our country.So why legalize the underworlds business.Underworld will buy more ammunition and create more havoc in India.In fact they can recruit more foreign people who are criminals/terrorists and place them in the legalized betting companies.Just think.How underworld can use the license.The effects on our society will be catastrophic. I can tell you that at the end of financial year a bookie is at profit.No person has earned a fortune at the end of a financial year.A better will not earn much if at all he does.In 95% cases the betters end up equaling or losing more than the "Muddal".And the 5% lose it in the next matches whatever big money they earned. Just not the worth the risks.

That's exactly the point behind making betting legal. Once legalized, the entire money trail can be tracked down making it more difficult for it to be used for criminal activities. Every transaction will have a trail and syndicates would be required to declare their income and taxes which can easily be verified. Even though there are online sites accepting bets, it is not even legalized in US. Betting is legalized in most of Europe & Australia though. Don't know about SE-Asian countries. It's legal in the US according to local jurisdiction. Go to Atlantic City or Vegas and you can bet on pretty much any sporting and non sporting event legally. Online gambling is not legal in the US - well technically, it's the transfer of online funds for the purpose of gambling and betting which is illegal.

Earlier we had this one digit lottery and 50% of my town were used to be in lotto shops playing and losing their hard earned money. Argument that legalizing betting wil prevent fixing has no basis, rather it will increase the fixing.

Logo ka apna paisa hai chahe daaru mai udaye ya juwe mai unki apni marzi. And what has making it illegal achieved anyways ? How has it stopped 40 thousand crores from being bet on tournaments like IPL ? Making it illegal has only benefited one party that are the illegal bookmakers who are controlled by D gang mafias. Just because there are no legal options of gambling, people are not going to stop just there. They will anyhow find the illegal means to continue with their hobby which helps Mafia groups to make enormous sums of money , a huge chunk of which is then used in funding anti-national activities. People might not be aware about how much money made by the illegal kingpins is being used for terrorist actitities. If gambling gets legalized all the transactions and profits would be regulated by the government. It is better to generate revenues for the Government instead of the D gang. It will be a fair deal for prospective gamblers and huge tax collections for the Government.

The whole 'this is too tempting and too many people will wreck their lives over it' is not a reason good enough to deny the ones who are responsible with their activities. Why should i have to suffer the lack of proper betting avenues because the rickshaw-pullers in their droves cannot budget ? This is like saying lets ban coca cola because kids cannot control themselves and drink coke till their teeth dissolve. Legalizing betting wont irradicate match-fixing but it most certainly will take business away from the bookies. Look up what sportsaction odds are, the over-unders etc. These are the things that 99% of the common man bets on and i see no reason why atleast the majority of the betters wont follow the legal legit option (when and if its available) than go to illegal bookies. It also standardizes the nature of the bets being thrown down, instead of 'creative ideas that some bookie came up with fixing a match, which requires player cooperation'. Instead do what most of North America doe with sports action betting- give odds to margins of victory and personal records/performances.

Legalizing means allowing it to happen within the frame of the judiciary. There is no encouragement or discouragement - it's an option. There are many things in life which are full of risk including investment in stock markets to choice of education institutions. It doesn't mean the choice should be taken away because it is one with risk. One needs to differentiate between personal choice and harm to the society. Legalizing betting causes no harm to the society. The state should be responsible for the over all well being of the people. If the subjects make fool hardy choices, you have yourself to blame not the state. In the same vein, everything from porn, medical procedures to alcohol should be banned since it can "ruin lives". I don't see how legalizing betting "ruins people's lives". If anything, it is the unfairness of the system which encourages malpractices.
