DARBHA (JAGDALPUR): For anti-Maoist crusader and Congress veteran Mahendra Karma, the last few minutes of his life must have been excruciatingly tortuous: a handful of hardened female combatants took turns to stab him 78 times, making sure they inflicted maximum pain before he met his end. The precise description of Karma's execution was provided by two shepherd boys to CRPF's elite CoBRA commandos, some of who later spoke to TOI. To ensure that the Maoists had got the man on the top of their hit-list, the women cadre — 10-12 of them — first checked with other Congressmen whether it was indeed Karma even though he had revealed his identity to the Maoists. When it was confirmed, the women began making fun of him, asking him about his "last wish". "Karma was taken away from the roadside into a thicket and asked whether he wanted to put on fresh clothes or have his last meal," said a commando, quoting the shepherds, who stood mute spectators to the ghastly killing. "One person was sent to bring his lunch from his vehicle. But Karma remained silent with hands tied behind his back. Then, a dark complexioned woman fired a shot in his back. But he did not fall down. Another woman broke his leg with a log of wood and he collapsed. Soon, other women joined her and began stabbing his face," said the commando. While the Maoists had already claimed that their purpose was to "punish" Karma for launching Salwa Judum, the controversial anti-Maoist armed tribal militia, the women rebels attacked him as if they had a personal score to settle. But then the Maoists are known for their brutal techniques of killing their enemies, especially suspected police informers and security personnel. In 2009, the macabre beheading of Jharkhand special branch inspector Francis Induwar by Maoists was condemned even by their supporters. Karma's post-mortem report confirmed the testimonies of the shepherds. His body was found with 78 stab wounds, including three on his face and four on his buttocks. His head was crushed with rocks. The shepherds' statement that Karma was shot only twice, too, was confirmed in the autopsy report, handed over to Jagdalpur police by forensic medicine department of the local medical college. The shepherds had heard one of the women shouting and firing at his buttock at first. And then, he was shot at his abdomen after he died. Both the bullets went through his body and neither could be recovered.

He was in a bulletproof vehicle. They tried to him shot him inside the SUV but bullets could not break the window glass, but then he came out and tried to surrender and they subsequently killed him. He should have runaway from there.

These naxals don't deserve any sympathy. All their talk about working for the tribals and other downtrodden is just bull ****.They are just power hungry devious criminals hiding behind a socialist face. They need to be brought down ruthlessly and quickly. A few moderates may have to suffer but then they deserve it for choosing to be on the dark side.

Knee jerk reactionary comes to mind. Are we also considering the kind of pain and suffering infected by our forces on indigenous population ? Some stories don't get to us. They were tracking this guy for years and have made 6 life attempts on him. Simply killing them will not solve the problem. This is not an ideology based on religion. There is genuine problem also here.

This is not the answer to that problem.....The naxal problem now is not about the people...it is more about our neighbors fighting a proxy war. Besides once things come to this and become so large scale ...their is only one solution. All out war...that is the only way to defeat terrorism of any kind.Any soft peddling only increases the pain over longer periods dragging more innocent people. whether we like it or not...this is India's war of the future. We can fight it now or suffer the consequences for a very long time. People who sympathize with this kind of brutality need to be ready to take it too.

+1 considering if naxals are fighting for an ideology based on communism and maosim, then this is not compatible with democracy, communist means abolishment of democracy. If we are a democracy, and if we are going to defend it, then naxalism must be exterminated along with banning other mainstream communist parties.

:giggle: If only you could identify your enemies ...Naxalism is threat because they are not easily accessible , they use guerrilla tactics and roam around in toughest of the terrains. State can not go shooting everyone , it will have lot of collateral damage like what happened in killing of many innocent adivasis few days ago. This will alienate villagers from the state and they are prone to be exploited by Maoists. SO it is a tricky situation and needs to be dealt carefully. I fact state tried salwa judum, and it was a failure. Only way is target their leaders secretly, and hit the top ladder.

 The preamble to the constitution of India: We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic. The two ( communism and democracy) needn't be at loggerheads. On topic: I think the Naxals are Maoist/Communist only in name. There is no principle of Mao/Marx that they uphold. Its just a name to give their land-grab movement a some kind of justification. Maybe when they started out in the 70s they were influenced by Marx and his teachings. Doesn't seem so anymore.

that is an amendment to the original, a sad legacy of Indira Gandhi, besides socialist doesn't equal communism. anyways eventually a communist government will lead to total state ownership of the economy which in India (going by past and current evidence of scams) would definitely lead to a totalitarian one party rule.

The 44th amendment did away with most of the rules in the 42nd amendment but kept some of the "legacy". The 44th amendment was initiated by the Janata Party which had Vajpayee and Advani as cabinet ministers.

Communism and Socialism are not synonyms.

Going for all-out war would be suicidal. Not only this would paralyse the whole manufacturing sector but also the children who will suffer in the conflict would turn into even bigger criminals in comparison to the current generation of Naxals, who has refrained from attacking cities and industries until now. Besides many other factors such as the need for imposition of emergency caused by armed rebellion by the govt, constant threats from border areas, huge cost to the exchequer etc makes this option practically impossible. When Army is still not able to contain the violence in North East, what is the guarantee that they will be successful in the much larger Naxal infected areas? All round development is the only solution and that will happen only when, we the common people pull these poor people out of their misery. And its not about paying taxes, its about helping these people with direct action. Until WE(with the help of govt) do something about it, Naxals, who cash in on the anger of the poor, are here to stay :((
