Dude don't know if you were around watching cricket in the 80's and 90's but he was a crowd puller....He was our very own Boom Boom :giggle: Played crucial role in 83 WC final and 85 World Championship, Captained India and succesfully drew in Pakistan of all places. So yes he is an Indian Legend

Yes, He deserves criticism for some stupid stuff he does today, but that does not take away from his achievement as an unorthodox successful opener for India.

He averages only 29 in both formats and that is very very poor, Patil, Vishwanath, Amarnath were good players in the era and he was poor or maybe he had a jack to be in the team for that long.

Among all the tried ones to partner Sunny, Srikkanth was the best until the fateful Pakistan series where he developed a mental block after he was knocked down by Akram. Sidhu took over from there. Shastri was just a temporary option. Sunny many times told Srikkanth made his job much easier in the 80s. Also he was a good fielder and could roll his arm over when needed.

Srikkanth was given commentary opportunity much like how Shastri, Arunlal, L Siva were given. But he was horrible much like Bishen Singh bedi. He lacks humility that is the problem.

He stepped up for us in some big tournaments......was one of our earliest impact players......easily in the top 15 ODI batsmen we have ever produced.....I'd consider him a great.....again......don't judge him purely on stats......

So we have our own version of "everybody hates us" here, and yes, to ans your question, Tamil Nadu has never been a recognized source of talent for Indian Cricket, It was Mumbai earlier, Its Delhi & neighboring smalls towns written all over now, R Ashwin is the only Tamil cric who has it to make it big.

I have long been a trenchant critic of Srikkanth as a Test opener. However recently a friend showed me the stats as to how terrible we are in producing opening bats that I am now much more lenient to Srikkanth's career figures. Here is the performance of opening bats from 1980 to 2000. Mongia 27.29 Jadeja 29.33 Laxman 24.63 The truth is that the 1980s saw Indian domestics see regularly scores of 650-750 with #8s and #9s scoring hundreds. Just check the Duleep Trophy scores if you have a doubt. The likes of Carlton Saldanha, Lalchand Rajput scored big time against Bharat 'Dennis' Arun, Raju 'Curtley' Kulkarni, Rajinder 'Jeff' Ghai, etc. Saldanha's name was thrown about so freely in the 80s as the guy whose career was being blocked by Srikkanth. But this is what Saldanha came up with when given a chance against visiting teams: v Aus 1986 : 21 (McDermott/Davis/Gilbert/S Waugh) out of 208 v SL 1986 : 70 (Labrooy/De Mel/Anurasiri). Heck, even B.Arun hit 107 here v Pak 1987: 1 (Akram/Zakir Khan/Tauseef) out of 281. Pak scored 674-5. Other than Manjrekar(128), rest of the Ranji Bradmans crapped against this pop-gun Pak attack. v WI 1987: 6 (Patterson/Davis/Walsh) 73-7 in response to WI 550. Srikkanth atleast had 2 50s on a greentop v Patterson/Walsh, 50s against Imran/Akram, 3 50s against Hadlee, 4 50+s against McDermott/Reid/Hughes, 1 against Botham/Dilley. I am not sure if the Lambas/Saldanhas/Arun Lals are equally capable.
