vayuu1 Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Folks he was clocking 90mph consistently ,with one ball clocking 94mph, got the wicket of cook,with him,topley,Overton and Finn English pace bowling attack look very bright.

Umesh also could not sustain between matches. He dropped for his pace for swing. But he is no Steyn to benefit from that tradeoff. We hype bowlers based on clock speeds. That's it. We kinda ignore everything else. seam position, wrist position, whether he really gets anything out of that pace, whether he is able to control it. Our bowling evaluation starts and ends in clock speed that is put out on the screen.

Since India hasn't had a of bowlers who were express, any bowler who bursts on the scene with the capability to bowl 90 mph particularly on dead Indian pitches - it attracts people around here. Obviously, there's going to be a little bit of hype as such a bowler is a rare commodity and by definition a rare commodity has a high price.

In fact, Anderson, Broad, Finn, Tremlett could be their best attack in ages and none of them bowl particularly quick. Australia on the other hand regularly produce good pace bowlers.

The pace at which it reaches the batsmen are not shown. But ,from an effectiveness point of view, that is the more relevant speed. Bowlers who get some zip off the pitch are often very effective bowlers and get a lot of wickets even if their release speeds are ordinary. Good examples are McGrath, older Walsh, Bhuvneshwar, Philander etc. Also, other factors remaining same, tall bowlers who get steep bounce, are much more difficult to play and often create the effect of pace by hurrying the batsmen. This aspect is obviously not shown by speed gun readings on tv. Skill level is obviously important. Ability to hit the deck hard and get seam movement, swing and control are of paramount importance. I guess they get discussed less here because we have had some skilled pacers but only a handful of quicks. We tend to want and discuss what is missing and needs improvement. But, while discussing pace bowlers' quickness aspect only, pace off the pitch , ability to hit the deck , bounce and the effect of all this on the batsmen also need to be considered and discussed.

Yadav has also bowled 95 mph in international cricket. Didnt Aaron also took Cook's wicket in a one day match. So what different Tymal Mills has done, which these two have not?

Regarding swing, even Steyn bowls 135k when he goes for swing and you only get better when you play more. Yadav has very good seam and wrist position that is why he gets zip of the pitch. His problem is he does not how to use that which will come with experience.
