It is great that Zaheer is doing this. The concern is that, even when he is fit, he looked to have lost the spark in his bowling that made him so dangerous. Like for the tour to Australia he was at his best physically for years. Perhaps that can change. Yuvraj will make it back to the ODI team. No doubt.
Zaheer Khan was the highest wicket taker for India in that Australia series. Correct me if I'm wrong. Yuvi will score well on most tracks for ODIs as they tend to be flat but when there is help for bowlers, he wont do well. For instance, on a pitch like yesterday, he wouldnt have made many runs. Yuvi and Raina dont have the best temperament and technique. They will struggle when conditions are a bit tough for batting.

Quite honestly, we should not be giving these guys Kudos for doing something they are absolutely expected to do. They are elite professional athletes. They shouldn’t be in anything but supreme physical conditioning. Even otherwise – nice to see the 2 making an effort. I still have my question marks with Zak, but Yuvi still has role to play in the Indian ODI side.

Zaheer will be 35 by the time SA tour starts, I think all he is looking for is a goodbye series, I don't think he is coming back. I fit yuvraj will walk right back into the side and he will make this team stronger.

Zaheer IMO can play 3 tests in SA 2 in NZ 5 in England one indian home series in the middle 4 in Aus and then retire at the end of the Aussie away series. So thats 20 test matches he can potentially play in till he is 36 years old. Thats if things go according the plan (which they may not as he may become injured or be **** with the ball and not be selected or become unfit). After that he will play in the IPL for a few years. That will be his plan. I dont think India will be reliant to that extent on Zaheer due to Umesh and Bhuvi. But if Zaheer can bowl at a decent level, i am sure he can replace Ishant in the playing 11.

Exactly - congratulating them for doing the basics is quite embarrassing really. But when the bar with fitness has been set so low, just picture RP "Miami" Singh's belly on the last Eng tour, then you can understand why people get excited at "international athletes" actually running and breaking sweat.

Zaheer looks good' date=' but Yuvraj still looks pretty fat, needs to work more.[/quote'] Exactly my thoughts ,his double chin, love handles are still visible, still 4 weeks to go,then,I think it will give a better picture of yuvi's position.

to be fair they have gone to a famous (at least in the uk) specialist to lose the weight. It will easily cost them about £25,000 for the entire package. A similar conditioning expert (who is not well known) in my local area is charging £2000 for 6 weeks. I am sure that they could have simply stayed at home and hit the gym, swam etc. What they will gain with this camp probably is also the know how to keep their bodies fit. They will have their bodies analysed and be given specific foods to eat which they can eat through the year. You can argue, especially in the case of Zaheer that he should never have got into the position whereby he put on so much weight in the first place. But I feel he has understood the value of fitness.

Wonder why they should not be congratulated for their efforts? One has fought off death and is trying to win back his place in the national side, the other is 35, done a lot for his country, won a cricket world cup and still trying to fight for a place in the squad. Even if they both quit the game today, they will forever remain Indian legends - Yuvi in ODIs, Zak across formats. Despite all that, the hard work they are putting in to make a comeback is nothing but praiseworthy.

Yes great initiative demonstrates hunger after what ones gone through and the other for his sheer acknowledgment of his age and still eyeing a comeback - SA tour one would hope. And they know competition isn't all that hot - there are a number of open places ODI included - hope gambhir gets something out of his small stint with raman as well.
In the case of Yuvi, i think even he knows that once he proves his 100% fitness + some form the place is his. He walks into our ODI and T20 side. A batsman like Yuvi probably does not need to be at the same level of fitness as Zaheer. Bowling 20 odd overs in a day in test cricket per day is much harder than playing ODI or T20 cricket as a batsman and part time spinner. I personally disagree on the competition. Zaheer probably knows we have Bhuvi now. There was a time when it was Zaheer or bust for us. Same for Yuvi. While DK has not made the best of it, there is a Pujara there to make his chance.

I see that but 18 months away from defending our turf in aussie land - i would think need a couple of tried and tested amongst the lot. Sure if somebody puts their hand up ala dhawan now u r not going to leave them out.
