Bhopal: The BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government is all set to 'saffronise' Islamic seminaries with its latest decision to make compulsory the teachings of Hindu scripture Bhagwad Gita for young students studying in madrasas in the state. In an order dated August 1, the state government has said Urdu textbooks of Class 1 and 2 will include teachings of Bhagwad Gita. The controversial order comes just four months ahead of the state assembly elections. The order is likely to create a huge controversy as it clearly applies to Islamic schools, the only ones to have Urdu textbooks. Congress, the main opposition party in the state assembly, has already termed the decision "saffronisation" of Islamic seminaries and asked the government to immdediate revoke the order. Madhya Pradesh minorities education body has threatened to take a legal action against the move. "Withdraw the order otherwise, we will approach the court," the body said. Three years ago, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government had made a controversial decision to make 'Surya Namaskar' and chants compulsory in government schools. This was toned down after Muslim bodies moved court.

FYI, Gita is a not about relegion & practices.. Its more philosophical in nature & is more about the moral & ethical struggles of everyday life. When Arabian nights is prescribed as a supplement to introduce one to the Arabian culture, why not Gita? Let them have a supplement of all relegions every year. Muslims in India need to have a more worldly outlook than having the frog-in-a-well syndrome

It's a good move. Just including a single chapter will not make them to be converted to Hindus. We have read in our history books about prophet mohammad, but why so much fuss over Gita? Shows the immaturity. Only the weak radicalists will make a big issue and turn this into a communal tension. :giggle:

Some of the madrasa students told me that the study about other religious books is part of their curriculum.So i think there is no need to force them

..an official release issued here last evening said that apart from Gita, project works have also been assigned to include subjects of other religions in school books. These include - life sketch of Paigambar Mohammad Sahib, Karbala incident, Guru Nanak Dev, Gautam Buddha, Mahavir Swami, Jesus Christ and Nawaz of Ajmer. Lessons, poems and information on Christmas, Bibi Fatima's life sketch, Holi, Id, Diwali, Onam, Dusshera, Guru Parv and Mahavir Jayanti have also been included in school books of various classes, the release said.

I need one clarification. Does Saraswati Shishu Mandir's curriculum includes information about other religions?
Saraswati Shishu Mandir's don't run their own curriculum. They have to go by the curriculum that State Education Board prepares. So just like any other govt. schools, these scholls also teach some information on other religions including Christians and Muslims. Actuall in SSM's other than standard books they have some additional subjects related to indian cultural heritage and religion. That's where they try to influence thinking of young kids.

Thanks. So if there's a manufactured news that Govt. has asked all SSM's to include Holy Q'uran in their curriculam, would it generate any controversy?

I studied in Saraswati Vidya Mandir and from 5th to 8th we had NCERT study curriculum used by CBSE and after that, it was UP Board. We did not study religions there.

There was nothing like that as I have studied in a Saraswati School. We did have prayers of Saraswati in Hindi and Sanskrit and other stotra in the morning but nothing which will influence or create religious conflicts.
